Too late to seed a lawn?
I spent ages removing a concrete path, digging and removing flints from the end of my garden, part of which will be lawn, and part a veg bed. Anyway, I've filled in a disused septic tank, levelled the lawn area, spread some compost, and I want to seed it. I would have liked it to be ready earlier, but there has been so much to do in the house and garden. Is it too late to sow grass seed? If so, should I cover the area with a thin black membrane until spring? There are two lawn areas, about 7m by 4m and 4m by 4m. The larger area is a bit shady in parts, the smaller area is sunny.

I don't think that it's too late. We cleared a big area last year and went to a garden centre around this time (or it might have been slightly later almost into November) and bought a load of grass seed. According to the packet we bought, autumn is the best time to plant and spring the second best time. It might depend on the grass seed. DH and I were pretty sceptical, but actually it started growing within a couple of weeks and by mid summer this year we've got a lovely lawn. Only slight problem for us is it's grown so well and seems to be faster growing that our main lawn... Well worth a trip to the garden centre, though, I would say.0

Local council reseeded our verges this weekYou never know how far-reaching something good, that you may do or say today, may affect the lives of others tomorrow0

It depends whereabouts you are.
The horticultural lecturer on my local radio show this morning (Yorkshire) specifically said it was too late for seeding lawns as it's too cold for the seed to germinate - but that it's not too late to turf.0 -
Thanks all. I am in the South, east of Basingstoke. I will throw down some seed, hopefully tomorrow.Warning: This forum may contain nuts.0

Agree, I was always told the best month of the year to seed a lawn was October,
