I want an 8 inch tablet

Hello all

I am going to buy my husband a tablet for christmas-he will use it for facebook/twitter, games, iplayer, kindle and general browsing.

I've done quite a bit of googling and searched this forum and have come up with this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/PLOYER-MOMO8-SPEED-android-sandwich/dp/B0095GF1TU/ref=pd_cp_ce_0

I would add an SD microcard to up the storage.

Just looking for a bit of advice as to whether you think it's fit for what he'll need and if anyone has this one?

thanks in advance

Interesting choice of title. Do you REALLY want an 8" tablet? Looking at the spec' for this one, it seems pretty good (especially for the price) but one or two things stand out as "unusual". Firstly the 8" screen (7" is more common) second is that it's got a 4:3 screen. Apple's iPad has a screen in the same dimensions, but the vast majority of Android pads have 16:9 screens (that is, the Apple ones are closer to being to square, like an older TV, and the Android ones are more like a modern "widescreen" TV set). I'm a huge fan of Android tablets, and own several myself, but I've always gone for the conventional 7" screen (which physically is roughtly the same dimension as a fairly thin mass-market paperback novel) because it fits so readily into a jacket pocket. An 8" screen which is 4:3 will be slightly shorter and slightly wider... in other words.... just different enough to be too big to fit into a standard pocket!

The third thing... the seller makes absolutely no claims about battery life. Whatever it is that your spouse wants to do with his new gizmo, he's going to want to keep on doing without the battery running flat. Tablets generally have pretty good battery life (esp when compared to laptops, for example!) I'd want to know more about the battery life (and why it's - perhaps conveniently?- not been mentioned.)

My own preferred choice of tablets is Ainol, but there's a small band of posters here on MSE who prefer rubbishing suggestions to being positive, so I'd better also mention that there are PLENTY of OTHER Chinese companies who make very good tablets, and at very low prices. One good place to start researching is "Colonel Zapp", a German hobbyist who has posted many reviews (in English) of a wide range of both tablets and phones on YouTube. He's pretty forthright on whether they're any good. And rememberr.... Google is your friend!
  • Thanks for your reply. I actually only thought about 8 inch as I'd read a few reviews from people preferring 4:3. To be fair I don't suppose the size does matter, so will widen my search.

Thanks for the tip, I will look at Ainol too.

But size DOES matter! Which is why - these days - almost everybody carries around a mobile phone, but back in the day, we sniggered about those yuppy idiots with phones the size and weight of housebricks. There's a size below which a gadget isn't a nuisance to cart around with you (because you can just bung it in a pocket) and there's a size where it's a damned nuisance: where it's just, fractionally, and by a few millimetres, too BIG to bung in a normal pocket. Apple is locked in to the 4:3 screen format; they can't adopt a 16:9 for their new iPad mini, if for no better reason that the ghost of St Steve would haunt them for the rest of time (Steve Jobs sniggered at the idea of a 7" tablket, and pronounced that Apple would NEVER produce one) In my view, St Steve was absolutely right. - a 7" 4:3 tablet is just "bigger enough" not to fit in a standard pocket, and will prove to be a pain in the bum to carry around. Nobody else seems to have noticed that when Apple talk about "seven inches" they're talking about something significantly different to Android's idea of what a seven inch screen looks like. People hear the words "seven inches"... and they just don't make the jump.
