Car insurance address change

hi, I'm thinking of moving house, but I am worried that the insurance for the car will be canceled as it is a high risk area. I am currently with tesco and I wouldn't be able to afford new deposits etc to take out a new policy. If the insurance company refuses to continue my cover how much notice do I get? Will I be insured up until I move into my new house or would they cancel it right away if I enquire?

Thanks

May be you should ask them before moving house?

If they won't cover you at the new address, they will still cover you at your current address until you move.

Try a comparison site to see what quotes you get for each postcode. That will give you an idea of the price difference and also which insurers will provide cover.

Dont be tempted to tell lies and pretend you still live at the old address.

  • I pay monthly for the cover essentially it's a finance agreement so I assume if they cancel I will have to pay the rest of the year. Is this payment expected in one go or can it be broken down? I also have a claim at the moment with them after a crash 2 months ago. Which I am currently trying to prove was not my fault. I am happy to provid the insurance company with a change of details but it may become very expensive. Is it worth having a 0% credit card clearing the costs then spreading out the repayments with the credit card over the 0% period also would that be a purchase or a balance transfer? Hope that all makes sense, I just want to be prepared for the financial implications.

You would have to pay the full amount (though because you have made a claim, not because you pay by instalments).

If you can't afford to insure the car at the new address, would you just move there anyway and sell/give up the car?

I would phone the insurance company up and enquire. They should certainly be able to process an enquiry (not a change of details) so you'd know how much the extra would be if applicable.

If the insurance premium is a large amount, and you genuinely couldn't afford to pay for the cancellation, and you have someone with space on a driveway in a lower risk area, you could keep the car there (ocasionally using it of course!) change the policy details accordingly (the risk is based on where the car is kept overnight) until you sell the car, which you could co-incide with end of policy if needed. Of course there would then be a risk of your car being stolen off the driveway, but it would depend on the area of course. In my parents area, it would be OK to just leave it on the street, but I don't think I'd want to do this in my current area! Just a thought anyway...

Have you tried getting an online quote for the new address? Don't use your own name and exact new address though I suggest, but do make sure other details are accurate including your possible pending claim.

I shall be in a similar situation soon - moving to a more expensive area for car insurance. My policy only has a couple more months to run before renewal. I have been thinking that it would be more cost effective for me to take out a new policy with another insurance company (at the new address) rather than changing my existing policy details (which I know would cost £££'s). I would then let the old cover lapse at renewal.

Would there be any problems in doing this (ie having two insurance policies in force for the same car)?

I still have proof of full NCB from the last renwal that I could use for the new policy.

    Thanks in advance, Scrounger

The ncd is in use on the current policy.

If you take out a new policy whilst it is still alive then you will have nil ncd to use on the new policy, meaning your scheme is unlikely to be a cost effective one!

    Thanks Quentin

How would the new insurer know that that my ncd was "in use"?
