Hi all, I received a letter saying I had been overpaid by £42. I rang the number on the letter and agreed to pay back £3 a week. I received payment slips so I could start making repayments 25/10/12.

This morning I received another letter saying I now owe £173, can this be right?

Comments

  • What was the number on the letter? Just in case its a scam...
  • It was official HMRC letter. The first Demand for £42 stated it was the total amount of overdue payments. Todays letter says we now owe £173 on top of the £42.
  • They could be over payments from different tax years?

My Friend had this last year and it turned out that one of the amounts was for the previous tax year and the other amount was from the year previous to that again!

I would give the helpline a call and they will be able to tell you the details of the over payments.

Didnt it state on the letter what years the over payments related to?

I know its no consolation but at least the amount you have been overpaid and are now being asked to repay isnt massive. Some people receive over payment demands for thousands
The loopy one has gone :j

My friend is currently dealing with the same thing.

A letter last week saying she owes £132 and one this week saying she owes £1200.

Seems they do relate to different tax years.

I got the same in the middle of this year saying we owed £3000 from previous years, when i called them they said it was from last year and the year before and the year before that too.Thing is we haven't had tax credits now for a year and now they want us to pay it up. Im paying it at £50/ month. My argument with them was if they knew we were overpaid 2 years ago why didnt they cut last years out so we didn't have to pay so much now. Really makes me not want to claim again incase i have to pay it back again.
P.S. I called them every year with the P60 details..
