Gas & Electricity... or not?

I moved into a brand new flat 12 months ago and now after joining MSE decided it would be worth looking into changing my utilities.

When looking at my bill i noticed that Powergen ONLY are supplying my electricity and there is NO mention of the Gas. My handover documentation from the builder has confirmed that Powergen are the suppler of both Gas and electricity to the property and i notified Powergen of me moving in (obviously as they charge me for the electricity). I called Transco to get my MPRN and they have no record of the property existing.

This leaves me with a few predicaments:

1. Who is paying my gas? Presumably STILL the builder who is working further down the road.

2. What do i do? Flag it up to Powergen and pay the bill for now 12 months which could be hundreds.

Or...

3. Switch my supplier and play dumb to the gas for the last year?

Your advice appreciated!

If it is a new build the gas pipeline co may well be an independent one, which is why transco don't have a record.

You may find bills have been sent but have the plot details on the envelope, or may still be going to the builder (but this doesn't necessarily mean he is paying them, they could just be going in the bin). In addition you need an MPR to swap, so you will need to contact either Powergen (if they are the supplier) or your pipeline co to obtain this, you won't be able to swap without one. Also you could be landed with an unexpected bill in a couple of months, which may or may not be correct.

So my advice would be to contact Powergen and try to sort it out before you switch.

Took your advice spoke to Powergen, they have no record of the flat being built :os

Decided i'll get the MPRN and register it with Powergen. If they try and bill me then i'll fight that corner then.

    Thanks for your advice though...
