You must use special delivery/courier. Recorded is notoriously unreliable and there is no guarantee the tracking will work.
  • What is the value of the item you are returning?

RD may be unreliable, but it's pointless paying a minimum of £5.90 to send something that may only be worth a few £'s.
If this is the case, use recorded delivery and if the item doesn't arrive then use your receipt to claim from RM.

Regardless if RD is unreliable, if the item is worth less than £46 send it via 2nd class Recorded
Over £46 send it via Special Delivery

Any problem with non delivery, the item is covered by Royal Mail's own insurance & you can make a claim with them.

Collect plus or myhermes have a cheaper tracked service where you drop off at a shop.

But all those saying recorded is unreliable - i have had 100% signed for at least 6 months now. The ones that are usually not signed for are ones that fit through the letter box. So makes sure it can't - then they have to knock on the door anyway.
  • I'd recommend myHermes or Collect+, as they are cheap, and fairly reliable

Yes - for that sort of value I think a courier would be wise.
