ok today the most georgous dog was sat looking at me through the kitchen window had spotted him during the morning and assumed owner near by, after realising that dog was alone i took him in took him over to pets at home to see if chipped but hes not, went to look at a few shop windows etc but nothing. i rang the local dog warden to see if any lost dogs with his description but nothing. i have walked all around local area but nobody out looking for him yet? the question is i am reluctant to send him to the pound just yet and would like to keep him over the weekend just to see if signs in the local area go up etc, and then maybe if nothing by monday morn hand him over. he seems like a family dog and i hate the thought of him being locked up with loads of others when hes sat quite happily here. I would love to have him but i have a dog of my own and shes enough for me. any thoughts???

Well good on you for being kind enough to take him in.bargainsneeded wrote: »ok today the most georgous dog was sat looking at me through the kitchen window had spotted him during the morning and assumed owner near by, after realising that dog was alone i took him in took him over to pets at home to see if chipped but hes not, went to look at a few shop windows etc but nothing. i rang the local dog warden to see if any lost dogs with his description but nothing. i have walked all around local area but nobody out looking for him yet? the question is i am reluctant to send him to the pound just yet and would like to keep him over the weekend just to see if signs in the local area go up etc, and then maybe if nothing by monday morn hand him over. he seems like a family dog and i hate the thought of him being locked up with loads of others when hes sat quite happily here. yes hes defo well looked after hes also a pedigree and a real beauty at that. his manners are fab as is his temperament. i just feel he is comfy here and may feel distressed in a cage ifyswim. I am hopeful that owner may put flyers up by tomoz, i have typed up a flyer that does not give breed but colour and my number, if its there dog they will know the breed and collar etc.0

Have you contacted the RSPCA they run a pet search for areas and people can access on Facebook etc. I know there is def. one in Essex. Good luck.0

I would phone all the vets and let them know you've found him - also what about putting a 'found dog' notice on dogspages?2014 Target;

I would try the DW and vets in the surrounding areas too, dogs can cover a fair amount of ground or the dog may have been stolen out of the area and dumped.
Also post him up on http://www.doglost.co.uk/ - try to keep any really unique identifying features out of his description though as that can be a useful test to ensure its really his owners claiming him.
A stray dog by law has to either serve 7 days in the pound or 28 days with the finder (if the dog warden allows this) so if you wanted to keep him, even temporarily, be aware that you cannot rehome him (e.g. a colleague or family member wanted to adopt him) before that time has lapsed. If you want to help him, try local dog rescues to see if any can make space for him after his 7 days are up - though ask the DW if the pound already has a rescue that does this anyway as many already have arrangements with rescues.0 -
i had heard about this 28 day stay with finder scheme where u sign a form to say u will hand him over etc, i would gladly do this but cannot find any info on itI would try the DW and vets in the surrounding areas too, dogs can cover a fair amount of ground or the dog may have been stolen out of the area and dumped.

this is from Cambridge County Council's website
What to do if you find a stray dog and want to keep it
If you find a stray dog and want to keep it you are legally required to notify the council. It is possible to retain the dog but you must agree to keep the dog at your address for a period of one month and to hand it over to the original owner if they come to claim the dog. The dog legally remains 'found property' and the original owner can reclaim it at any time so the dog never truly becomes the property of the finder.
If during the month you decide that you do not wish to keep the dog you must hand the dog to the Council. You are not allowed to give it to a friend or relative.2014 Target;

Well done you for taking him in, much better than sending him to a pound. As someone else has said, notify as many vets as you can as well as the RSPCA, police etc all the paces that people might ring if they had lost a pet.
Hope his owner turns up soon.0 -
Can only echo what krlyr said and put him on the found section on doglost.
How very good of you to take this lost dog in though. Please keep us updated.Ruaridh Armstrong-missing since 05/11/11. Come home old boy-we miss you x

Echo checking/posting on Doglost and check if you have a local facebook group for lost animals, we have one and it is very successful in reunited animals and owners, as members share and details posted
Well done you though, what a lucky dog to have found you
