Vehicle Registration Cert question

Please don't ask why I'm mulling this over now... But last year I sold my car to a private buyer. When I filled out the V5C, he asked to retain the yellow slip (for motor traders), instead of the green slip. I refused and he ended up with the green slip.

I'm wondering..
Why would he ask for it?
Was I right to refuse?
Could I have had problems if he escaped with the yellow?
Is it ok in DVLA's eyes; as he informed me?

Thanks in advance

If its last year, I wouldn't worry about it.

  • Probably so he could use it on the road untaxed without it triggering ANPR camera's etc.

    He was a trader.
  • You should have retained the yellow slip (and posted it to DVLA) and given the rest of the V5C to the trader.

    Selling to a motor trader

If you transfer your vehicle to a motor trader and you have a registration certificate you should tell DVLA immediately using the V5C/3 section and pass the rest to the trader.

  • Sounds like it was one of those dodgy home traders that sell a different each week from street outside their home. I have one of those dodgy traders near me.

he was a trader posing as a private buyer he would have wanted to try and pay less by being "private" then send the trade slip to not add an extra owner
  • So is it illegal? Or just frowned upon?
If I sell a car again I would like to know if giving a private buyer all but the yellow slip is gonna cause me problems

its not illegal its just traders think if they say they are traders the buyer will try to hold out for as much money as possible
you just give them the small green section and its job done

If you are selling a vehicle to anyone in the motor industry, you should complete the yellow portion known as the V5C/3 with details of who you sold the vehicle to in the motor trade. This notifies the DVLA that the vehicle currently has no registered keeper and is available for sale by traders.

Now if you sold the vehicle to a private person, not connected in any way with the trade, then you should complete the section (6) titled New Keeper with the new keepers’ details and take responsibility for notifying the change to the DVLA, and give the new owner the green perforated strip known as V5C/2.

It is always the owner’s responsibility to notify the DVLA with any changes.
