Quick question about paying back JSA

Really quick question:

I have recently started a job for less than 16 hours a week but which pays well over the minimum wage per hour. I have been on JSA and told them as soon as I knew I had passed the interview that i was going to be getting this work. When I went to sign on, the advisor told me to wait until I got my first payslip before declaring the hours. The next time I went, I told the advisor that I had all my hours written down if they wanted to take a note of it, but again they told me to wait until I got my first payslip. However, when I went to sign on this week, a different advisor took down all of the hours and told me that because I had been earning since the beginning of September (though not paid until the end of this month) I would probably have to pay back much if not all of the JSA I've been getting since then. It sounds really stupid I know, but I hadn't realised that I would have to pay back the JSA for the time I've been working. Now I have had it pointed out to me, it seems really obvious:o. I just wish they had pointed this out from the start.

My question is this: if I have to pay back most/all of the JSA, how do they ask for it? Do they take it straight out of your bank account? Do they demand the whole lot in one go, or are you given the option of paying over a period of time? Before anyone asks, I have spent most of it on travel costs so I am going to be quite short of money even when my pay comes through.
