How long does unaccepted cc app stay on file?

How long does an unsuccesful cc application stay on your file? I have defaults wich come off my credit report at the end of the year but I'm trying to rebuild my score in the meantime, having not applied for anything for a number of years (besides a phone contract) - if I apply for a credit card now and am turned down, when will it disappear from a search?
