Hotmail hacked - Furious and helpless

As it says on the tin. My super old Hotmail account that I use for forums etc has been hacked.

As the account is so old, I have no idea of the security question. I also never used it to send emails or anything - so, any attempts to complete Microsoft's stupid form are useless. I simply don't have the information as it's more a record account. Giving them what I had was turned down.

I just spent the last hour updating all logins to another email. :(

To everyone else - make sure you know the data to get it unlocked, even if it was over 10 years ago you did it!!

(Yes, I know it was my fault, but this has been quite cathartic :) )

Oh - and don't get me started on the fact O2 is down - apparently only to my phone, as everyone else in my office seems to be fine.

Now breathes .

This is a problem that is not limited to email sites.

If nothing untoward happens you can go for years from registering to needing some obscure piece of information again.

The worst are the sites that ask for something like a 'memorable date'. I can never think of anything other than the obvious ones which are not recommended.

The best thing to do is to get yourself one of the 'safes' that allow you to store sensitive information with a single password and be very well disciplined about keeping it up to date and backed up.
There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.

You should change passwords on a regular basis. I would suggest at least 3 times a year.

  • Some email accounts like gmail have 2 step verification process (they are turned off by default). So, if anyone tries to log into my gmail with an unrecognised device, a verification code will be texted to my phone. Without that, no one will be able to login.
  • Yep, I know I should have changed the password. Serves me right really.
