Can a company refuse to let me pay in installments

Hi,
Im sorry if this is the wrong place, I could not find anywhere suitable.
I have recently changed energy suppliers and have received a final bill from my old energy supplier. Its not for a huge amount, but it is for more than I can afford all at once. I do owe them the money and do want to pay the bill, but I can only really do this bit by bit. If I suggest I pay them £10 a month can they turn round and refuse?
Thanks

Yes.
Nothing else to add really.
They will likely start proceedings through the County Court to recover the money you owe. At which point you will be able to apply to settle the debt in instalments, but not without gaining a CCJ.0 -

You speak to them nicely and explain you're struggling or what ever reason and I'm sure they will come to sort of arrangement with you.0 -
So its not likely then.
I am wanting to pay, just can't pay all at once. If they had better customer service I wouldn't have changed in the first place.
Oh well thanks anyway. Will see what I can do.Current Aims: Laptop/PC, decent money, holiday

Bit extreme but eventually yes.
CCJ would only be enforced once every avenue had been explored. They are not going to enforce this if you can't pay them initially. It would be passed to a 3rd party debt management company before this.
Speak to them and explain your situation, say you are willing to pay it back, give them a breakdown of your income/expenditure.
Can you not get a 0% credit card and pay them off with that? This way you could pay the credit card company a minimum payment each month?0 -
no I cant get a credit card. I have had problems in the past with my money control and am absolutely rubbish with money. I can only get credit building ones now and even that I dont want as I just dont trust myself. Id much rather not get into any debt now.
I dont really want it to go to a debt management company as that will incur more charges. I obviously want to pay the minimum amount I can, but I cant all at once.
This has really thrown me and Im really worried about it, its not even a large amount (less than £150) I just can't afford it all at once.
Thanks for the link innovate, will certainly follow that advice.Current Aims: Laptop/PC, decent money, holiday
