Chimney Problem

Hi there wondered if any of you could help

i live in a 4 in a block flat (2 up 2 down)

ive just had the chimney stack reharled with everything that involves (to be honest im not sure the full list of work that went on)

anyway i can hear the wind pretty loudly from inside the stack and when it rains i can hear it dripping down and hitting something metal, i had contacted the company that done the work and they said i needed a cap and that was fitted the other week but i can still hear the wind and the rain :(

im just wondering if this is normal, is the rain doing any damage to the inside of the chimney stack?

if thats the way it is then fine but i thought that you shouldnt hear much coming from it since it has just been re-done

You will be able to hear the wind and rain unfortunately, it is quite normal.

If you have a metal cowl fitted, you may even hear a 'tink-tink' of the rain drops, as they hit the cowl.

Do you have a fire in place yet? Normally this will quieten it down a bit, as the fire will go into the chamber and block some of the noise off, but not all of it.

I have a metal liner and a metal cowl on my roof and a landscape gas fire fitted. When the weather is bad, I can hear the 'tink-tink' of raindrops and the wind whistling over it. If the TV isn't on, it is like a chinese water torture, but there is ittle you can do about it, it won't be every day and should only last short periods of time.

That is what you get for having a chimney I am afraid.

As rusyboy says it is perfectly normal for you to be able to hear the wind - rain and everything else once a liner has been installed, wait till you get a pigeon on top of the cowl !

When you start using your fire this will soot up the liner and dull the sounds coming down, but dont forget to get it swept every year !

There are a variety of different cowls available - some better than others which may ease the problem, another way to lessen the noise would be to back fill the void between liner and chimney wall with an insulation such as vermiculite.

  • hey guys thanks for the replies

yes there is a fireplace installed (and always has been), its a gas fire so will it still soot up? like i said it was just the chimney stack getting reharled

i think i have had a few birds on it at first i thought they were in the stack lol

as for the cowl is that the cap on top? ive tried to seach google images for something that looks like the cap on there already but no joy

Gas fire will still soot up a liner to a certain degree, usually more fluff and hair but they do still get furry shall we say.

With it being gas it should have the appropriate gas cowl on top and not a solid fuel cowl, have a look here for different types and sizes of cowl.

    Hi OP.

It looks suspiciously like a 5'' gas cowl which attaches onto a 5'' copex liner. What make and model fire do you have?

I have the same on my chimney, set up exactly like you have and have the same issues. There is nothing further you can do for it I am afraid. You do get to tolerate andlive with it over time. Just wait until you have a pigeon sitting on top of it and cooing away, that will drive you mad. lol !

Reason why I want to know your fire ake and model, is just to make sure the fire is suitable for the liner fitted.
  • sorry about the long reply kinda forgot about it while the wind and rain had died down but now its back in reply to the above question i have no idea its been here since i moved in about 10 years ago (council house)
