Garage Floor

My garage floor is bare concrete and I believe it has been poured direct onto the ground.

During heavy rain, when the garden floods, water seems to be rising through the joins in the concrete.

Is there anyway to seal the concrete? Things sitting on the floor in these areas get damp. When it is dry, there's a lot of concrete dust.

I've seen self leveling resins, but I'm not sure whether they cope with damp rising up underneath, or once they've set are they generally OK?

I think you would need to stick some damp proof membrane (effectively a giant poly sheet) then pour concrete on top again to combat this.

I didn't find it that hard when leveling our kitchen floor for tiling there's just a lot of mixing involved. I think for the area of a garage floor you'd be better off hiring a concrete mixer from somewhere like HSS or paying a builder to do it.

Tim, is it an external garage? Or is it attached to your house? If its attached to the house does the house have concrete floors?

If its attached to the house, I would be getting professional advice.

If its an external garage I'd probably still look to get some professional advice before proceeding. A good builder will explain the process better than I can.

Waterproofing screed such as Izonil or similar however examine what you are 'trapping' in as floor will not be able to breathe plus as Del says you need to watch where you are diverting any damp to. May need to paint over any new surface.

your better solving the problem rather than some temporary solution
and its water rising up so not technicaly damp rising so adding another "damp proof" course wont help do anything excpet trap or push the water elsewhere
your best bet is to divert water away by way use of linear drain

It's not attached to the house, except by the loosest of terms - I have a lean to that sort of connects it and that too has a small amount of water rising in it, but there's a damp proof course well above it on the house (you have to step up into the house)

I actually have a very old but still working mixer on site.

    It's a long garage - double length.

Not sure I want to go to that extent, I can probably just live with the damp, though a small bit of water comes under the door which I could do without, I may make a small concrete ramp to propel it away.

Shouldnt a damp course have been put in the concrete in the first place?
  • widen the joins with a grinder and fill with ct1 job done
  • some home owners do not use their garage to store their car, preferring a carport as an alternative solution.. Some garages contain a separate storage room to partially alleviate this problem.
