I wonder if anyone has recent knowledge of where to get the least expensive loft insulation ATM.

For various reasons (none of which are illegal or dodgy) we want to lay the stuff our selves, not have a grant provided fitter come in to do it. The loft 'floor space' is large ( too large for the grant amount we were to.d two years ago) so we would have to be topping it up anyway. There is currently NO insulation up there. We are having a wood pellet boiler installed this month, so need to reach the minimum depth required for the grant at least, which I think might be nine inches?

No idea where to start looking for price comparisons, there is so much stuff on the grants and their fitters on google that it makes it hard to see the wood for the trees.

The sheds usually have offers on-B&Q, Wickes, etc
But given how cheap it is anyway, and now that the heating has gone on, I suggest you prioritise it before the winter-without any loft insulation you night as well burn £10 notes in your new boiler. You'll get the money back in a couple of months.

Tbc, we have had no heating,(so while we have been cold it has not cost us any money so far) and understand how important this is in heat retention. And have no intention of NOT insulating.

I just thought active diyers or people who are in the building trade might no where the cheapest place to start looking would be. :)

A small saving on each roll is a large saving over all in a large roof space:o. Especially on the back of the works we've had done this 'summer' and the accumulated cost of that.

Have you looked at geeting insulation through the Goverment Schemes?
Have a look in MSE for insulation grants, or Google it
Got my loft insulation through this last year. 25 large rolls of 170mm fibreglass for £1 a roll delivered. which wa adequate for a detached bungalow roof
Just had to fill in the forms online and wait about 10 days for delivery from one of the local merchants
Was doing alterations to my roof space so wanted to install it myself as the work progressed,,

No, I didn't know you could get a grant just for the materials and fit yourself! That would be a significant help! THANK YOU I will google this immeadiately.

We have had builders in all summer, and my animals have been moved about the house to keep out of everyone's way as much as possible, our bedroom (where the loft hatch is) is the last reserve for the cats and so I really want to avoid people tramping in there too.

Can you tell me where you found this,

I am finding links saying its NOT available for DIY install :(
  • I'm sorry lostinrates but I think that you are too late for that offer :( Most of the Cert (Carbon Emissions Reduction Target) schemes ended at the end of September. Most of the offers now are only open to people on benefits.

Like joinaman, I had a load delivered earlier in the year... No checks on loft sizes ;) and even included a safety kit (mask & gloves) :)

Keep an eye out for something called green deal, that's due to start sometime soon. I think that energy firms have a target to install/provide to a certain number of customers with energy saving products.

Just to update this, I have been to b and q today (one of the householders has a discount card for being old) and to wickes. Wickes is MUCH cheaper than b and q but b and q does one that's made of nice soft fleece from recycled bottles which has a very slightly higher insulation value (5 rather than 4.5)

My plan is to nip back and by the base layer from wickes today and think about the rest, probably putting the fleece insulation in the area we or plumbers or similar might need to access, so arou d water tanks etc, because it's much less offensive to deal with.
