SSD and HHD

I have a Samsung 830 SSD 256GB-- OS is Windows7 Pro -- Mobo: Asus P8Z77-V LX--CPU: Intel Core i5 3570K 3.4GHz

The SSD replaced a Seagate Momentus XT 750GB that is now used as a extra backup storage.

The SSD that I use is large enough for my needs and it will not get close to it's full capacity in it's lifetime on my PC.
As prices drop I will just get a larger capacity SSD if needed.

My question is would it be the worth the time and bother of installing the Seagate as a secondary hard disk
Would I see any benefit when storage is not a factor ?

USB 3.0 Flash Voyager 32 GB and a 1TB external HD plus the Seagate that's a bit of a overkill

  • I would consider using the Seagate as your primary backup disk because if you want to do daily or weekly incremental backup images with something like Macrium Reflect you will get better write speeds across an internal SATA bus. I haven't recently checked typical write speeds versus external USB 3/eSATA but might be worth you comparing internal vs external if your external drive has one those interfaces. Disk imaging can take a considerable amount of time so the faster the interface the better. Choose the best.

If backup is the only planned use for an internal hard disk then you won't really benefit from SRT, although it is interesting to configure.

If you think you will have plenty of spare capacity on your SSD I would suggest using Samsung Magician to set overprovisioning to 20% ish. This will help the TRIM process and improve the life of your SSD.

  • I would like to have a go at installing the secondary HD but reading up on it the instructions are a bit confusing.

I'm using Samsung Magician but have not used the overprovisioning feature yet... So it 20% the recommended setting?

Apparently it has a hidden factory default OP of 7% but if you can give more then it will be better. More info here rather than me plagiarising.

Putting 2nd HD in is easy, fit in bay (couple of screws or quickclips), connect power and data cable. Unless you mean configuring SRT which it sounds like you don't need anyway?
