I recommend the Auchan store nr Boulogne, it's huge, very clean and some of the staff speak English.

As a chain I recommend Leclerc as they are all about saving money but some stores are a bit grotty. Casino is a good chain a bit pricier if you don't bargain-hunt but has more organic stuff (biologique in French)

I don't think any of the ferries do foot passenger fares now as there was a big tobacco smuggling problem.

PO ferries allow foot passengers but only on day crossings, that's whom I've used when I've been a foot-passenger when I've been to France for the day prior to taking the vehicle.
If you are going for Christmas shopping, I recommend visiting a Christmas market:

I went to the one in Bethune last year and that was pretty good, also the one in Bruges, Belgium the year before. Cite Europe is also done up really nicely for Christmas.

P&O do foot passengers from Hull to Rotterdam/Amsterdam/Zeebrugge and Bruges !
Also have 2-4-1 offer on the Mini Cruise to these ports !
    2 foot passengers , cabin & coach transfers for £74 !
    Thats good MSE value !
As for the Tobacco smuggling problem ? pure fantasy !!

  • If you live in London and want to go to Calais its £20 return as a foot passenger, if you have a railcard or 32? if not..

Including the train to Dover & Ferry across to Calais

I'm less than an hour or so to Dover from where I live, so none of the dreaded M25 nonsense (although I know you where not talking about motorways but trains anyway).

    Will go to Arras next.

I'm pretty sure cross channel ferries like P&O offer footpassenger fares but there is a time restriction (cant travel after 8pm) as then is the time the freight vessels come into operation and they aren't suitable for foot passengers. There is also the LD Lines crossing Portsmouth-Le Havre, I know it's further out the way and takes a bit more time, but I remember clearly being told that they do accept foot passengers. My source of information is www.ferrysavers.co.uk as I find them helpful, you don't even need to purchase anything from them and they will still answer your email queries, and give you quotes etc.
