Stopping JSA

Hi folks, I'm in the fantastic position of getting back to work 18 months after redundancy having been offered a position.

My question is, I'm due to sign for JSA on the 18th Oct, and due to start work on the 22nd. I can't remember whether the allowance is paid for the 2 weeks previous to signing, or the 2 weeks after signing, so I'm looking for clarification as to whether I can sign on the 18th?

I'm going to have mortgage, management fee, electricity bills etc coming out at the end of the month and need to know if i'll need to borrow money to cover those bills. I'm not sure if i'll get paid this month in the new job, or early enough if I do, so it'd be handy if I was still due the JSA for this fortnight.

Cheers.

    Congratulations!

Go and sign as usual on the 18th and declare to them that you have work starting on 22nd, make sure they get you to sign as normal for the fortnight up to 18th, they will then get you to complete the back of your signing booklet to sign off. You should receive payment for fortnight up to the 18th and the spare three days. Make sure you pay attnetion to what they do with the documents, they have a habit of going missing before they are correctly actioned.

Your JSA is paid to the day before you start work, so yes you can sign on the 18th and be paid up to the 21st, just let them know you are starting work when you go to sign on.

If you have been claiming JSA for more than 26 weeks and you have had no sanctions or dis-allowances, you will also be entitled to a back to work bonus and a 4 week run on for your council tax benefit and mortgage interest, if you are currently claiming these.

BTW, congratulations on your new job.

Id go to your sign on as usual and if you can call them on the 22nd to close the claim.

It worked for me, called the number provided and closed the claim and confirmation of this was sent in the post.
  • I tried to ring the back to work team before my sign on day and was told to go sign on first and then call back so I didn't lose any benefit. When I signed on yesterday I asked about signing off and was told to ring Monday if I could (I start on Monday) and tell them the last day I wanted to claim benefit was Sunday. The guy I spoke to made this clear as a lot of people don't realise you can stop your claim on a Sunday, most think its Friday.

Excellent info guys, and thanks for the congratulations!

Sues .. i'd be interested to know if there is anywhere online where I can see the details of the back to work, and mortgage interest bonuses as I was indeed on means tested JSA. I'd like to go in armed with that info if possible.

I'll have a google for it myself in any case, thanks.

Thanks Sues .. I actually found those after reading another thread. It also mentioned an Advisory Discretion payment, which I will ask about.

I'm actually still not 100% clear on what happens when I sign on this Thursday .. normally I'd get my 14 days worth, paid in on the next Tuesday .. but I'm unsure whether I'll get 17 days worth (as in, that I'd be due JSA for the 2 weeks past + the next 3 days before I start) or just the final 3 days worth of JSA, when I tell them I want to terminate it on the Sunday in between the two.
And don't forget to check for eligibility for Tax Credits and apply if necessary.

Is this applicable in my situation if I'm going into full time work?
  • There is a quick questionnaire you can do on the HMRC website that can tell you if you're eligible for tax credits. http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/taxcredits/start/who-qualifies/quick-questionnaire.htm
  • Also, in response to your query about your JSA payments. When I recently started work again I was due to start a few days after my signing day. I signed, handed in my completed booklet and a day later than my normal payment date received my 2 weeks payment, job grant, and an extra £25 or so for the few days between signing and starting work.
The payment was a day later than I expected. but when I rang to ask about the payment they explained that it was slightly later due to the job grant etc
