better sounds?

I was thinking about getting a bluray home cinema setup but following suggestions here instead I am using my ps3 as the player via hdmi. Forever I am having to turn the TV up a lot to hear it. Its a Panasonic s30 42 inch plasma TV.

What would be the best way to get better sound? I have a stereo I can connect up but its ten years old so the only connection is via phono leads.

Any suggestions welcome as always

Connect the stereo to tv via phono. Phono is good! I would always suggest a good amp as opposed to a 'home cinema' setup for sound quality if nothing else.

Panasonic usually have phono audio out. Simple twin phono lead to an aux input on the amp

Generally you go source - amp - TV - as in PS3 - Technics - Pansonic in your case.
The technics stereo will sound WAY better than any built in TV speakers.
Leave the HDMI the way it is.
Your PS3 should have come with an old style cable similar to what was used on the PS1 and PS2. It'll have the yellow, red and white phono plugs at one end. Connect the white and red into an 'Aux In' or any phono input really on the Technics (NOT the record player input!) and the other end into the back of the PS3.
You need to check the PS3's sound settings, as it's been outputting to HDMI, and you now want the sound to output to the phonos - the sound settings are in amongst all the other settings way over to the left.
Let us know how you get on.
Next stage would be an AV amp, which will have HDMI switching. Everything plugs into it, then it plugs into the TV and does all the switching for you. Plus a few speakers...

Checked and now need to work out how to increase the length of the lead. Af modulator leads to phono output but my stereo is a long way from my TV. Have to look in my man drawer see what leads I have
