help with benefits

Hi looking for advice

Married couple one partner working 2 jobs ..1. 8 hrs & 2. 16 hrs per week. Other partner claiming job seekers. 1 dependent aged 14 yrs. Have went on enitifledto & says that we would not be entitled to child tax credit or working tax credit:(

We thought that as a couple the 24 hours worked would entitle us to some benefit

Can anyone one advise please:)

It's wages too, if 24 hours pw takes you over the threshold you are not entitled. I take it you are referring to Cont based JSA?
  • Thanks for reply. Yes it is contribution jsa.

Working 8 hrs paid 50.80 16 hours paid 99.04 total weekly pay of 149.80

Would that take us over threshold

    Thank you

No it shouldn't = the cut off for 1 child is £26K per year

Did you do the calculator right?

Hold on, one more thought. Tax Credits are annually based.

so if your OH earnt from April - October and those earnings take you over the £26K then you won't be entitled.

    is that the case?

My thought would be the same as princessdon: did you make a mistake in the calculator?

If nothing else I would have thought you'd get some housing benefit and council tax benefit. Unless you have savings over the £16,00 threshold.

  • Partner has worked from April to present but has not earned anywhere near £26,000 more like £8,400 to date but on Cont JSA now. Unfortunately no savings either.

Obviously I have done something wrong on the calculator so will go back & try again.

    Many thanks for your help

You need to ignore earnings last year

    For income add

Earnings to date for OH (8,400), JSA (26 x 71) and your earnings.

However, a word of warning. IF your OH gets work and over the year (april - april) this is over £26K they will ask for repayment, just to make you aware. I'd rather have money now when I needed it in your shoes though.

Are you in rented or mortgaged? you should also get help with rent if that is your curent situation.
  • Think thats where I went wrong I entered last years earnings

Will try again with your suggestion & have noted about the 26K

We are mortgaged & know that we probably wont get any help with that although its not a very large amount that we have to pay

    Thanks again

You won't :( Been there personally, but you should get some Tax Credits - just note my warning that a new job soon will result in repayment - but better now and pay back if needed I'd say.

Hope it all works out, there isn't enough support for families where the main wage earner is made redundant and the "2nd earner" has to take up the slack. If you weren't working the results would be so different.
  • Just checked again putting in the new figures & entitled to a council tax rebate & child tax credit

Hopefully he will get another job but who knows what the future will bring especially in this time

I am also looking for full time employment
Can I just ask what you mean about not working the results would be different ?
