LOvely babies but.. can not any Maine Coon in either of them.

Has your friend seen the parents? Both parents?

I have a feeling your friend was cheated in more ways than one but the main point is those georgeous babies landed on 4 paws with your friend and this is all that matters.... :)

    I
    .

Whilst my friend may have been very foolish (and she freely admits, acting from her heart, not from her common sense gland) is there anything that can be done regarding the 'breeder' of these kittens? Letting kittens go at 5-6 weeks old is just dreadful, in my humble opinion.

Acting from her heart would have involved adopting kittens from a rescue, not encouraging unscrupulous breeders and wasting hundreds of pounds.

Our first kittens were bengal/MC x, Roobarb looked like the bengal mum (a kind of marbly grey/pink colour) and Rocky is just a normal looking white and ginge. We were expecting them to be long haired, but they both were short!

Our current kits are siamese X, and when we got them they were definitely not the 9 weeks old that was advertised! but sadly, we had fallen in love with their big blue eyes and took them away.
I'd like to think we rescued them from the dodgy owner, the mum had already had 3 litters with the local toms which I think is just wrong when they clearly weren't proper breeders.

Unfortunately it is exactly this attitude which keeps many of these places going (a bit like sad puppies/kittens in the pet shop? People give them hundreds of pounds. What do you think is now going to happen? They are going to get the mum cat speyed to live happily ever after? No, she will be bred from her again and again and again until she is no use (not making them any money) and then probably abandoned. possibly having been mated with an FIV Tom. Or dumped on a shelter and PTS or left for a rescue to pick up the pieces.

I know others who profess to be massive animal lovers and yet they have done exactly the same thing as this and always say the same 'well at least I rescued them' - this is a very very short term view. They are very often seriously ill.

A friend of mine paid £400 for a puppy from a farmer who said his b*tch dog had accidently got pregnant - even her vet laughed at her for believing this! Was that mum now speyed? Of course not.

Anyone wanting a puppy or kitten, please please please visit a rescue!!! And get it neutered.

And as for breeders 'letting kittens go at 5 weeks old' - hold on, it takes 2 - what about people TAKING kittens at 5 weeks old!!! Anyone else in this situation please just WALK AWAY. You are propogating future misery byhanding money to these people. And think of the poor mum cat searching for her tiny kittens.

I heard about a lady who marched into a pet shop and demanded they give her a very sick kitten - that's more like it.
Less stuff, more life, love, laughter and cats!
Even if I'm on the shopping threads, it doesn't mean I'm buying! Sometimes it's good to just look and then hit the CLOSE button!
  • Oh my goodness, how cute!

If the "breeders" are local, I would make sure EVERYONE you can get in touch with knows about them, and also inform the vet where they were from so they can be aware if any more are brought in.

    .

Please remember that many people who are able to offer happy homes for cats/dosg are not "accepted" by rescues as they do not meet their very often overstrict criteria.

All my 5 (dog and 4 cats) were bought via Gumtree - I wanted dog and cats but none of the rescues I have approached would consider me.

So - I bough mine and look after them to my best ability.

And yes, they are all neutered.

Lovely, but I'm willing to bet a tenner of them both being bog standard tabby kittens - as my brown tab also has a spotty tummy.

Your friend has made a backyard charlatan an awful lot of money - guess what's going to happen in roughly 70 days' time?

That's right, more [STRIKE]'bengal' crosses[/STRIKE] random moggies for sale.

If not accepted by a rescue, look or ask at a vets, they usually know of animals needing a home eg owner gone into care or died. Also some of the good to free homes ads are genuine, just dont take puppies or kittens when they haven't yet had mum spayed.
If you take kittens or puppies from free to good homes without checking mum has been spayed, then the owners will just let their mums continue to breed, saying 'but we always find homes for our kittens/puppies'. And with cats, dogs, kittens and puppies dying every day, people like these need to be stopped.

Also, those kittens look exactly the same as the hundreds of tabby moggies that we have taken in to rehome over the last 20 years.
DONT BREED OR BUY WHILE HOMELESS ANIMALS DIE. GET YOUR ANIMALS NEUTERED TO SAVE LIVES.
  • Please, may I just say that my friend regrets she didn't simply walk away and is now sadder but wiser. She was shown a cat that allegedly was the 'Mum' but not the Dad. I had no idea she and her husband were ready to adopt another cat/kitten and only heard the full tale two weeks ago. I'm relieved though that the littler kitten, Mo, has recovered and with much love and veterinary care I hope and pray will thrive.

All our cats were from rescue centres or taken on as they were dumped on our land. But my friend will tell her friends and hopefully her experience will alert others of what to avoid if they look to give a kitten a home.

I did wonder if the RSPCA might be interested? But they're too busy I guess.

Sorry but I disagree - the brown one definitely shows Bengal genes. I've seen plenty of them to recognise a Bengal when I see one (or not as the case may be) - I would say it's a marbled Bengal not a spotty one.
