Lapland day trip

I am so excited we are off to Lapland to celebrate my DS's birthday but am hoping someone out there may be able to help me.
We have booked the day package with Thomas cook to Katillia. We are provided with snow suits and boots but aving never been anywhere 'cold' (other than my dear welsh valleys) am not sure what to wear underneath lol will my jeans and hoodie be ok or should I get those baselayer suits?

Lunch is provided but it doesn' say what type of lunch it is - any ideas? Just thinking of a little packed lunch for the little one.

All our activities are included but how much money do you think we should take? How much are things there?

Is there a post office? I have a load of letters written to each of the children in my sons class to post to them.

:santa2:AM SO VERY VERY VERY VERY EXCITED :santa2:

Don't wear jeans. They don't keep you warm at all.

I'd wear baselayer longjohns under a pair of fleece lined walking trousers. Baselayer long sleeved top, the merino wool ones are excellent.

How exciting. Lapland is amazing & a real once in a lifetime experience.
Definately, no jeans...you will freeze. Get some thermal underwear ,long johns & long sleeve vest top from an outdoor shop, minimum of 2 pairs of socks, cotton & thermal ones on top. Balaclava if not provided & take some ski goggles or sun glasses. If it is snowing when you are on your skimobile, you wont see a thing. Layering is the most important thing. Dont put any water based moisuriser on your face either, that wi freeze too. If most things are included,I would just take a few euros for souveniers, like a cuddly husky dog toy. Food wise, it is international so your little one will be fine. Soups, jacket potatoes, spag bol & lots of hot chocolate. I did a Lapland day trip with my kids and it was magical. Have fun.

for info on what to wear look at https://www.lapland.fruitbandit.com but you wont need sunglasses - the sun does not come above the horizon from mid dec onwards

go to primark and get some fleece pjs - they are so the best - you will be supplied with an outer snowsuit etc and they are good and warm so just a few thinner layers underneath will be fine

take some chocolate bars with you - if you read some of the reviews about the food on some of the day trips you will not hear good things - so no harm in taking extras

it is also going to be a long day - 3 hour flight there and back so make sure the kids sleep as much as possible on the plane out there as nothing worse than kids falling asleep at the best part of the day - take some blankets and little pillows for them for on the plane etc if you can

Take lots of vaseline type lip balm. You'll need hats and gloves, preferably two sets, thin ones under thick ones. Two layers of clothing under the thermal suits, yes, if you don't want to buy thermal underwear then thick wooly tights and a long sleeved t-shirt under thick joggers, a sweatshirt and a microfleece will be okay. Take a jacket and good walking shoes too, remember you've got to get between the plane and the place you change into the thermal oversuits!

One other thing is if you take a camera make sure it has a good padded case, most cameras start grumping at -20'C. My backpack cracked in the cold when I was there!

  • You will have a wonderful time. I second all the information here, but we spent out on some proper ski gloves that were able to go to about -30, and we had about 4 layers on including thermal long johns and vest, we were never cold.

I made a case for our video camera out of fleece leaving just the viewfinder and lens, but this was 17 years ago so any case you need for any cameras just needs to cover most of the camera leaving it operable. You could check on the manufacturers website to see if it is able to go down to those temperatures.

As for the post office, there was one where we were but I can't for the life of me remember the name of the town (I do remember everything else though, like the look on the faces of the kids!). I would be very surprised if there was not one near where you are going.

Most of all have a very good time.
What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare

Thank you all for your advise am so glad I asked. Just a few more questions...... Those of you who have been on these day trips when we get there we will have coats and boots which won't be worn whilst there because we will have snow suits and snow boots given to us there. Is there somewhere to keep our stuff during the day?

Am getting very excited now. Our ds doesn't know and we don't plan to tell him til we get to the airport lol
