Best option for a new landline

My friend lives in a house that has no phone line whatsoever so will need a new line installing.
BT charge £130 for connection and £129 for a year up front line rental, 12 month contract. Or..
They charge £40 for connection, and £129 for a year up front line rental, but you have to sign an 18 month contract so presumably after the 12 months you'd then have to pay 6 months at their monthly line rental or another year in advance.
Either way, these 2 options work out about the same.
Does anyone have any experience of using a different provider to install the line? I know it all gets done via BT Openreach, however is it worth using TalkTalk or a cheaper provider to set the new line up? If so, who is recommended?

Yes it is. Why pay BT prices? Plusnet charge about £49 last time I checked, similarly Sky.
Do a exchange search on https://www.samknows.com for your available LLU providers. No free lunch, and no free laptop

Post Office Homephone charge £60 but unlike Plusnet dont require you to take their broadband to get phone service.
Plus and its a good one they dont have a minimum term.So your free to leave whenever.
