Depends what you consider cheap - you can use this code for the alton towers hotel and splash landing hotel;
link - https://secure.altontowers.com/ria.cfm?promoCode=&rate=0&versionChecked=true
code - gdd
all thx to OP on http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=401400&highlight=alton+towers0 -
Hi
You may find this useful
http://www.cressbrook.co.uk/accommodation/bbsearch.php
select how far away from Alton Towers you want to stay and then click on the map on Alton Towers and it will bring you a list up.

With such a large family would camping work out the cheapest? I just bought an 8 man tent for around £200 - a good make too. There are a few campsites reasonably close to AT. There are places in Leek that I know.0

we also have a big tent do you know of any around alton towers and the pitch prices?0

Hi
Try here
http://www.cressbrook.co.uk/accommodation/campsites.php
near the bottom of the page there is a site listed in Alton that may be ok - no personal experience of the place though.
I know of the one on Blackshire Moor, just outside Leek that would be ok. Closeby there are the Roaches and some nice pubs to eat at, The Three Horseshoes and the Lazy Trout are two nice places to eat.
I notice there is a site in the listings at the bottom of the page that states, close to Alton Towers - this is "Star Camping & Caravan Park" 01538 702256
Google mapping this on their post code - shows they are around 2 miles away - see Google Map0 -

Did you get sorted for a place to stay?0 -
If you want to camp you could try Hales Hall Park in Cheadle, which is about 10 minutes drive from Alton Towers. (Or you can pitch your tent in my back garden, (5 mins away) and I wont charge you much!!! lol0

There's a campsite not that far away!
Have a look at this map (zoom out a couple of notches, and wait for the data to load)... it'll give you some ideas for what's in the vicinity.
