VISA debit card Purchase Protection

PLEASE HELP!

I made a purchase of a 4 week course to a sailing school based in Gibraltar, using a visa debit card, which I can no longer attend due to changes in my work commitments.

I have contacted the school to notify them and ask them to search for somebody else to take my place on the course, which begins on 21st October, and they are doing so. However, they are refusing to refund the amount of £2350 citing their terms and conditions.

Am I protected in any way through Visa? Have I got any case to make ?

If not, what else are my options? For example, could I ask them to give me credit when booking a future course with them?

A very upset, and disgruntled customer.

Any help would be fantastic.

CCard protection is usally for cases where the supplier fails in there end of the contract.

In this case it you that are unable to fulfill the contract.

Any chance to pursue your employer for this? if they have made you have to change your plans?

No as above it covers you when a company defaults not when you do not go through with the purchase.

A few years ago when the Iceland Volcano erupted we had a holiday booked through Expedia and internal USA flights. (luckily UK flights were book via airline and as they could not provide flight out of UK they reimburse quickly)

We could not fly due to the airspace being closed, Expedia would not refund (as per the sale T&C's), the hotels do not want to know as the seller was Expedia (and they sell the rooms cheaply to the likes of Expeida etc.) United airlines did not want to know and in the end refunded less than £2 in taxes!.
Up shot was we stood to lose £6,500 through no fault of our own but could not claim back through either Expedia, the internal airline or our credit card as the seller did not default.

Initially our insurance said no as it was an 'Act of Nature' but in the end them came good and we only lost about £150 (better than £6,500.

In your case as you have to cancel and the only reason is work commitments you will not be able to claim your money back (I assume you cleared the dates with your employer, so there should be no reason they should not honour the booked holiday time).
Everything has its beauty but not everyone sees it.

No protection at all for change of mind...

Same would go if you had used a credit card.

You are at the mercy of the company to see if they can/will do anything.
Asking if you could have a discount on a future booking might work.

As others. Work has caused the issues. So is it worth losing +2K. Can you not tell work that due to booking that you have arranged that you are not avaiable. If not are they prepared to assist in funding the loss.
