recovering Outlook Express password

Hi there,

My PC died a month or so ago (have now replaced with iMAC). This also lead to me losing access to my Tiscali email account - it was working fine before so obviously there are servers out there for storing/forwarding the email - but for several years there has been no online access.

I thought I knew the password but it seems not - as I was unable to access the account from my Outlook Express on wife's laptop (which has also since sort of died - think I need to reinstall OS).

TalkTalk (who bought Tiscali) say they cannot access the account or reset the password or do anything to help at all, one person citing Data Security Act.

I have accessed a file on the old HDD which contains this field:

<POP3_Password2 type="BINARY">010270006f0070002e0074 ... and so on ... 0030000000</POP3_Password2>

Can I use this to either retrieve password, or to plug into Outlook Express on a Windows laptop setup for same email id? Or any other suggestions to regain access - I don't want to actually use the email account in the future just need to see the important emails I have missed.

Many thanks .... Simon.

If you can read files off the old drive then you can open OE on it and access your emails, if the account is still active.
PC's don't 'die', discrete components just stop working. If the drive is still functioning then you can pop it into a USB caddy and access whatever you like from it.
You can also import the files already downloaded into your current email client from the old drive.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

not surprisingly says Windows applications aren't supported on OSX, but if I get a Windows laptop connected to the old drive I should just be able to click on the exe file and up pops Outlook? Cheers.

Not denying you have a point but I take the long view - I've had a Dell PC for almost 10 years despite it being slow and subject to several bad infections over the years (yes I had av & firewall).Decided to try the alternative this time and don't mind a couple of hundred pounds when it is effectively likely to spread over the best part of a decade.

Yes, you'll need a Windows OS (XP or earlier-Vista/W7 do not support OE).
But clicking the .exe will install the program-you said it's already installed on the drive? Just open it from the desktop icon if you want to access the existing install.

  • if have access to the disk on which the OE files are stored - which will have the password stored in them encrypted - then use this on the disk.
It wil search for the right data and give you the password
