Planning for Children
Comments

We'd always had a couple of foreign holidays every year, and by not having these, we channelled the same money into "baby" costs, which seemed to work very well.
My OH started looking around for bargains as soon as pregnancy was confirmed, so we had cot, pram, clothing & bedding, monitor, and loads of nursery toys well before we needed them - she just kept an eye open for offers and sales. She bought plenty of nappies, wipes etc BOGOF.
Luckily her sister had two children a few years older, so we could "pick and choose" their cast-offs, i.e. bed guard, various toys, car seat, etc.
We also "persuaded" family and friends to buy what was "needed" on birth, christening, birthday, christmas, etc - a bit like providing them with a "wedding list". That prevented duplicates and wasted gifts.
I think, though, the most important "money saving" tip was to really look after everything, keep things clean, keep original boxes and packing etc. We've sold things as soon as possible, and managed to get surprisingly high values for the cot, pram, clothes, toys, etc by advertising the larger items in the local newspaper and the smaller items (clothes and toys) on e-bay. We just "churn" the money earned into buying new stuff as WHA Jn grows older. We found there is a very high demand for good quality "as new" baby things.0 -
skdotcom wrote:Lots of good comments so far. To add my pennies worth, I'd say if you want children and you are (mentally) ready for it, then don't wait. Not everyone is blessed with falling pregnant at the first try, and until you try you just don't know how long it will take to get pregnant.
My wife is 36 weeks preganant, and I'm about to be made redundant. Money for us is a real issue at the moment, but it shouldn't be the primary concern when considering whether to have a child.
I totally agree with skdotcom and was going to write more or less exactly the same. You don't know till you try whether you can fall pregnant.I am now 29 and after losing our first baby last year I feel I am getting to age where if I need help to conceive I am running out of time. Please don't take it for granted you will fall straightaway, even though I fell within 2 months of trying but things didn't work out.If you are ready then I would say do it now because like everyone before me has said you will manage.:heart2: Love isn't finding someone you can live with. It's finding someone you can't live without :heart2:0
