Will I be charged a fee for using the unauthorised OD, but I put it back in the black within a couple of hours past midnight?
Or is the fee applicable, whether authorised / unauthorised, only on uncleared daily balances?

You'll be charged a fee if your account isn't back in the black by close of business that day.
This 'close of business' time varies depending on whether you're using branch, online, or telephone services. If there's nothing in your T&Cs then a quick call to Halifax should get you your answer.0
