In my local Asda yesterday they had loads of cans of 'La Fresca' Chestnut Puree (435g) reduced to only 10p a can!
So of course I had to buy 5 cans at that price.
Any ideas what I can use it for?
There is recipe for Chestnut Stuffing on the label but says it can be used in soups & desserts
The ingredients are listed as Chestnuts(60%), Water, Sugar & Salt.

i did the same last year! I found loads of recipes for sweet chestnut puree but very few for unsweetened - which is why I still have it!People seem not to see that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character.

Hi
I use chestnut puree for a veggie xmas meal, I think the original recipe was by Rose Elliot but I've long since taken the book back to the library and never wrote it down.
I fry an onion, pepper mushrooms. Add the puree and cook gently. Then use it as a kind of sausagemeat filler and wrap in pastry. The original called for red wine, and other things but I just add whatever I fancy. I've even tried to make burgers but they were quite sticky. More breadcrumb coating required probably.
I haven't been able to find any in my Asda, where abouts was it stocked? I would love to try more experiments.WL 11 st 5lb as at 050109. 160209 11st 2lb

Gateau Turinois (really easy and delicious!)
500g unsweetened chestnut puree
100 g butter
100 g dark chocolate
100 g sugar
a little vanilla essence or flavouring
chocolate sprinkles or other small chocolate bits for garnish
Put the chestnut puree in a bowl, add (softened) butter, sugar and vanilla essence. Grate the chocolate and add it to the ingredients in the bowl. Mix it all together so it becomes a homogenous mixture.
Spread this into a tart tin or a shallow serving dish, and sprinkle over the chocolate garnish.
Chill in fridge to set for at least 2 hours before serving. Serve with a dollop of whipped cream."Remember that many of the things you have now you could once only dream of" - Epicurus0 -
Great thread to use up the tin of Chestnut puree I won at a tombola! only thing is I'm not sure if it's unsweetened or sweetened. It says 2% sugar, but that doesn't seem much to sweeten it. It's the Merchant Gourmet one.
ThanksNow proud Mumto3 :j0 -
chestnut puree is gorgeous to add to casseroles, like turkey beef or pork- goes well with bacon- good food site has a few recipes
if it is sweetened , and i am not sure yours wil be if 2% then you can make a really nice chesnut pie with sweet pastry case and chocolate0 -

I also bought 6 cans of this at my local Asda yesterday - 10p per tin, plus two dented ones at 5p per tin :money: - seemed like a good idea at the time- but I don't know what to do with it either :D......
PS It is the unsweetened version - how do I sweeten it to make the desserts?"Men are generally more careful of the breed(ing) of their horses and dogs than of their children" - William Penn 1644-1718

Just checking whether anyone has successfully used unsweetened chestnut puree after having frozen and thawed it? I can't imagine it would be problematic, but just checking in case it thaws out useless...I have meat in the freezer which might enjoy the puree as part of the casserole by the looks of this thread, but not for a week or two yet...
(I used the missing third of this tin in a brussell sprout and chestnut soup, but couldn't taste the puree at all, so wish I'd used a lot more of it!!)0 -
