By the looks of things she might well be walking by then :(

Really, well I guess that could be a little tougher then. If they are walking you can walk up and down the aisle with them a little bit when the trollies are out of the way.
  • Is your journey really necessary?

Having a baby is an excellent reason for having a holiday in France, or Scotland, or anywhere that is accessible by surface transport.

It wasn't my decision of destination as my mother has booked and paid for the trip out of the inheritance she received from my Grandfather. In addition traveling on land isn't really any better for her as she gets upset and carsick in cars.

Not to mention all the stopping and starting for toilet breaks, car sickness etc. Atleast in on a plane you dont have to stay awake and all your food and drink is brought to you!

Yep those are the bits I'm looking forward to! Apart from the baby I also still get mildly carsick so the kinds of journey involved in going to Scotland or France wouldn't be particularly comfortable for me either.

My Mums friends Daughter, is flying to Australia with her 22 month old daughter, on her lap!
Gads, the thought of it! I also pity the person sitting next to them. But then again it is Emirates, so if the baby starts crying they will prob get upgraded to business class!
  • Thanks for the replies :)

Me too. So Id much rather be on a plane for a similar amount of time and come out to sunshine at the other end :)

Hi, I took my 18 month old DD to Florida in Sep. On the flight out she only slept for 40 min, but the rest of the time she was quite happy to sit on my lap watching people, pressing the buttons on the tv or watching videos on my phone. She wasn't bothered about the new toys I got her! She is a very fussy child normally, but on the flight out she didn't have one meltdown!

The return flight was a different story - i thought it would be better, being a night flight, but no. We were those parents with the screaming baby, and had a million daggers in our backs I'm sure. I ended up taking her to the toilet at the back, so no one could hear her :( She screamed for a good hour, but did eventually sleep for about 4 hours.

We flew BA, and they provide the bouncy chair/car seat style seats that sit on the same fold down table as the bassinets by the bulkhead seats. I think they are designed for up to 18 months/15kg, sor something similar. They are free of charge and you could reserve them and and the seats for your party online as soon as you have made the booking.

    Have a good holiday x

ETA: My DD doesn't walk, so no option of her toddling up and down the aisles either!
  • I have not had a chance to read the replies, but I did a round the world trip with my 9 month old, and it was a really good age to travel with them.

Having some puree to feed them during the take off and approach to landing helps them with their ears to help pop them before they hurt to much.

Keep back a variety of toys that he loves and keep them from him for two weeks before your departure, so when he sees them in the plane they are new and exciting for him.

Board books are also good for him to play with.

In terms of the milk powder, check to see if they have this in Florida and if not try to pack it in the hold luggage to take with you. It might seem a lot of weight but well worth it, as milk powder in other countries do taste different.

In terms of your hand baggage, don't take any food or drink in it, despite them letting you take it through, they tend to ask you to sample it in front of them at security, and then they have all been opened to the air and not sterile. I would suggest calling Boots airside at the airport you are travelling from and asking them what foods they stock and then place an order with them to collect it from them on the day of departure.

In terms of the older ones, a movie is always available on the plane. Perhaps buy them some new books, word searches, crossword books, Amazon have some age related, and wrap them up along with any other small gifts they might like. Then as they get a little restless give them of the items, wrapped as a present. Ask the air hostess what time will be the last time to go to the loo before landing, and take them to the loo 10 mins before then, so you don't have any desperate needs to go.

Good luck, have a good holiday

PS - In terms of kit to take, an unbrella buggy is great as most airlines allow you to take the buggy up to the plane and then it goes into the hold. The down side is you often don't get it back again until the suitcases, and there can often be a long walk to get there, so also take a sling, or if you have one a backpack. This is also ideal, as it does not count as hand luggage, and if you have a storage pouch in the backpack it is an ideal way of increasing your hand luggage

We flew to Florida when my eldest was also nine months old and she was fine. I nursed her on take off and landing as it helps with the ears. We flew with BA and had the bulkhead seats with a bassinet. She slept for an hour or so and the rest of the time we passed her between my husband and I and my aunt and cousins who sat across the row from us. She was absolutely fine and just seemed to be enjoying people watching! We took a redeye on the way back and she slept right through. We flew with her again at 2.5 years and it was much harder as she just did not want sit still which was fine when the fasten seatbelt signs were off. Unfortunately out outward journey was very turbulent so we swore we wouldn't fly again until she was a bit older. She is 5 now and we're flying out again at Xmas to Boston so hoping she is fine. Her sister will be 2 though so not looking forward to it but its a big family meet so we'll just have to grin and bear it I guess.

Relax and enjoy your flight, I'm sure she will be fine. I think it's much easier when they're babes in arms, totally different when they're toddlers!
