You do need 6 months validity on passport from the return date back in the UK. So your wife will need a new passport.

Sorry, but that is not true. As per the link above it only has to be valid for the duration of the trip.

A friend of ours went to the US with 5½ months left on his passport and was refused entry as there was insufficient validity on his passport.

To be on the safe side and as you have time, I would get a new passport for the wife, the time left on the current one will be tagged on to the new one.

Then apply for the ESTA once the new one comes back

You do not need 6 months extra after your visit. Some countries are counted as having an extra 6 months AFTER expiration including the UK

    http://www.state.gov/documents/organization/104770.pdf

"Passports, regardless of the type, must be valid for six months past the expected stay in the United States (unless country-specific agreements provide exemptions). This is a requirement for all categories of passports - regular, diplomatic, and official - when the traveler is seeking to enter the United States for business or tourist purposes, for a maximum of 90 days." http://www.travel.state.gov/visa/temp/without/without_1990.html#travelertype

And country specific agreement is the pdf link.
