  • both the yaris and the jazz have dodgey gearbox`s , the yaris failed today as it happens and its not the first time the box has been off and the jazz was my daughters last car , the layshaft bearing failed so that cut me for £350

french are a pain , if you get a good pug then your ok but some arnt so good , shitrons are just that , fabia and anything else along this line is expensive and not as good as some would make out ,,, like the owners ? id avoid for sure

nissan micra , id be shocked if you broke it , they just keep on going and going , love or hate the looks you get to go where you want to , very hard to break

not hard to break a micra actually, just dont do often oil changes in the early timing chain ones and bobs your aunty youve knackered the timing chain tensioner.

i dont know much about the newer ones, i dont know anyone with one to have a peek and a chat about them.

ive seen a decline in complaints about french vehicles since 2008 is some of the onwers forums have actually made praise to the newer megane and clio and twingo's.

If you want something dull, unexciting and unlikely to get you a 2nd glance from other motorists, pretty much any vauxhall built in last 10 years will suffice.

If you want something you might actually like, try the suzuki swift.

A lot of people on here had never had french cars then.

Last one was a Peugeot 106, diesel, 55mpg, bought at 90,000 miles. got shot at 150,000.
Cost next to nothing in parts.
The C3 does 65mpg, no dpf, no dmf, £30 a year tax, already done about 8k in it.
And that's not on a run for either, mostly urban mpg.

It's a fair comment, the 1.4 HDI is a good little engine. Only thing I've ever found them to suffer from badly is wiring problems (can be a death nail for them) and chafing the fuel lines on the top of the engine (easily prevented if you sleeve them before it happens).

The Ford 1.4TDCI is actually the same engine, and generally, the Fiestas with them in are very, very reliable.
Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?

Reliability is the key here. Can I get that at £3k?

Thanks for all the suggestions- very helpful & I will look at all the models suggested.

I spent £4k on a Civic 2 years ago and have only replaced tyres and brakes on it. I have done 30k miles in it in that time...

So buy something reliable (like a Honda) for £3k and you may be surprised...
  • Definitely a focus/fiesta. Been driving MKIV Mondeo Titanium TDCi and I absolutely love every bit of it. Ford forever!
