Laptop start up problem

I have an Acer Travelmate 292 laptop. It's about 2 and half years old. If I start up from cold it works fine. It I restart or turn it on again soon after switching off it doesn't get very far. It seems like the BIOS fails as it won't get past the initial screen and pressing F2 to access the BIOS settings doesn't work. If I leave it for 15 minutes it starts up with no problem. When it's working there's no problems. The logical thing is that there's a motherboard problem that effects start up when it's warm but doesn't effect normal use. However such hardware problems are rather beyond my normal range of knowledge so that could be nonsense.
The Acer is a real pain to take apart and before I go the whole way and look for any obvious problems inside I need to be sure I'm not missing anything else related to other components which might be causing this.
Any advice would be welcome.

The fan is clean and the air intakes are fine. I don't get an obvious overheating problems when it's working.0 -
