Organic food in supermarkets

Fantastic guide ^ I love the idea of using the rye as it sounds easier to 'look after'..
Not been doing it long, but it does seem lots easier than many starters you see described, plus not so much waste - try it, it was surprisingly easy. It stuttered a bit around day 4 but we just kept going with it. All you need is jam jar, flour & water!0 -
Hi there Quasar ! We buy 5L containers of distilled malt
...vinegar to clean floorboards before sealing and waxing. You're lucky that your Morrisons had organic garlic !
smallblueplanet.. think I just discovered a new hobby for OH :T He'll also be making his own free range organic pickled eggs this year and preserved organic lemons.
Waitrose organic New Zealand lamb steaks for dinner tonight, which were grilled the right shade of pink, juicy and tender. Accompanied by a pile of lovely org carrots and leeks from Sainsbos. Supermarkets did well for once.
Watched Skyfall and was caught  at the end.. I was thinking maybe the baddie would turn out to be M's son but how wrong I was. Sam Mendes did Bond's 50th anniversary film proud :T0 -

I would like to say I recently bought some organic basmati rice instead of normal brand and OMG what a difference. Now I know that sounds a little weird (well does to me) I think fruit, veg obviously seem to taste the difference but rice? Usually covered in something else ie curry, chilli whatever but to see the difference and taste ther difference I was amazed it was fab. It has made me even more convinced to try other things now and not just the wonderful veg etc :-) happy days0

Compared to regular long grain or regular basmati rice? If the latter that is very interesting, I would not expect that either.
What is your cooking method? I much prefer the flavour and texture of steamed to boiled for basmati. I have a rice cooker but Delia's method works like a charm

Thanks for that sarah222 :Tdo you remember which brand you tried please ?
I had a Chinese next door neighbour at a rented house years ago. Not stirring the rice is crucial. I'm not at all sure I would the oil and onions though unless for curry. Stock cubes may be too salty perhaps (not Kallo organic low salt) but HM stock can be a far stronger flavour in fact.
Laverstoke Park Farm organic beef or lamb bones 1kg 1.99 from Abel & Cole make fantastic stocks.0 -
Beginning to think OH has hollow legs.. he's taking to work today:
2 individual size Riverford organic ham and leek tarts, small can Green Giant organic sweetcorn, organic cherry tomatoes from Riverford, jar of Sainsbury's SO organic kalamata olives. Small Riverford organic fruit bag comprising punnet green grapes, 3 bananas, 3 oranges. Also taking 4 organic Royal Gala apples and a punnet of organic red grapes from Sainsbos. Two Rachel's organic fruit yogurts. Flour Power City Bakery ciabatta from Riverford and a small block of organic Farmhouse Cheddar from Lidl plus a tin of Heinz organic cream of tomato soup.
Methinks too much fruit and not enough veg myself.. he thinks it's too cold for celery, spinach, rocket, watercress, spring onions etc. Admittedly with porridge that's for 5 breakfasts and 5 lunches but it seems a lot. :eek:0 -

Geek alert: be interesting to see the nutrition breakdown for that.Gut instinct is not enough protein or bulking fibre or minerals, too much sugar/ carbs with porridge too. IMO it seems a lot because it's primarily water. Agree way too much fruit and too cold for salad; bento box recipes contain a lot of blanched/ lightly stir fried veggies in sauce, would that suit?
Otherwise I'd balance with fish or seafood for protein and vitamins, nuts or seeds for fibre and minerals, both supplying EFAs. Feel free to tell me to (cheval)burger off.Declutterbug-in-progress.⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️0 -

I'd persuade him to take just his lunch in a daily portion as could more accurately see what he gets through a day and how balanced what is being eaten (plus work fridges are usually hell holes for smells/unclean to take all that in advance) - does anything end up wasted if he's taking whole loaves of bread/blocks of cheese?
The River Cottage Everyday book has a lot of interesting lunch ideas.0
