First Utility Security Fee

with an impeccable credit record, I was shocked to learn that I had been turned down for a First Utility switch through Uswitch. I eventually got a reason from them that I was not on the electoral roll, but they were very keen to get me to pay a £300 deposit which would be 'refunded' after 6 months. checking with my local council, they confirmed I am on the electoral roll and provided proof of residency. surely this has to be a scam. Pressing First Utility, they said that there was no credit scoring issue, only the 'electoral roll problem'. they theen said that as they were a relatively "new company", they took precautions. I think this all needs investigation and wouldd be pleased if you could take it up. Anyone else out there had the same response?

    Welcome to the forum.

It may or may not be a "scam" but it is their offer to trade with you. I assume your answer is "thanks but no thanks". Surely you have a Plan B. BTW I take it you do understand about "deferred discount"?

Analyse the situation. They say you are not on the electoral roll, you say you are. Whatever the answer, a matter of fact. The issue is why FU (err... just an abbreviation:D) think you are not. The answer likely lies in the method they used to check. Most organisations perform a Credit Reference Agency search (even if not credit scoring). You must be informed if you ask FU:D which external databases they searched. If a CRA, it may be worth checking your statutory report (1) for evidence of a search but (2) more importantly any evidence of address inconsistency. For companies which search in this way the "fact" is not that you are on the Electoral Roll but that the CRA lists you as being on the Electoral Roll.

Up to you what you want to do. I would be very surprised if there were not "Plan B" suppliers who don't feature "deferred discount" or early termination charges:T waiting for your custom, Edf and Scottish Power to name two.

It's not the only factor in a credit search, but it's one of the most significant.

Personally, and I'm sure a lot of posters on this board would agree, this has done you a favour as their service record isn't great...
