OR if anyone wants to help differently I have a brother hl-1440 which is flashing the reaady and alarm lights constantly indicating a paper jam. I have no paper jam and I havaae carried out most of what seems to be suggested on teh internet with no joy. If anyone wants to help with this too then i'd be grateful!

Id recommend any HP or Xerox laser printers
For the one you got have you tried removing from plug for 5 minutes (should clear memory)0 -
We have those Brothers at work. Pull the whole drum out (including toner) and give it a good clean with compressed air (or just blow into it). Put everything back in, close the door and press the button 3 times quickly. Do 3 pages of 'settings' get printed? The quickest way to become a millionaire is start off as a billionaire and go into the airline business.

We have a Dell, 2 years old, not looked after, cheap toners and used alot.
A squeeky roller is the only thing that has ever gone wrong - was less than £100 new.0 -
I have a HP 3005dn I bought from an IT auctions for a fiver - had never even been used. The toner ran out after a year so I bought a non-branded one from another auction for a tenner. It'll do 20,000 pages.0

I concur... I have an old ML4500 which has provided great service over the past 5-6 years especially since I managed to pick up half a dozen end-of-line toner cartridges from PC World a few years back for £9.50 a pop.
Just upgraded to a colour Samsung CLP-365W from Argos (bargain at £89.99) strictly for use when mono prints just don't work (hopefully the cartridge prices will have come down by the time I have to replace them).0 -
Thank you very much for your recommendations I will have a look at all of them.Bowling_4_Gold wrote: »We have those Brothers at work. Unforunately I've tried absolutely everything. Nothing at all is being printed, it won't even move the roller things at all, just the flashing lights.0 -

or more specifically their "sister company" IJT of Somerton in Somerset. They're jointly offering FREE PRINTERS. Yes, I thought it was too good to be true as well. Buy two sets of "compatible" toner... and they'll GIVE you a laser. "Surely it must be a REALLY rubbish Laser?" I thought, and Googled it, just to check. And was slightly amazed to find that it had won an award! I rang Morgans the next day, gave 'em my card details, and bought the required two sets of toner cartridges. They delivered a brand new Dell Laser that can either be connected to a desktop system, or to your router (when it's accessible by anyone who uses your WiFi network) That was two years back. I'm still using the laser, it still works brilliantly, I'm now on my fourth set of toners, and Morgans are STILL giving printers away. FWIW, IJT are the cheapest supplier of spare toner cartridges. The laser was a Dell.
EDITED 28th October I've been asked to edit my original post here with links to 'prove' what I'm saying. Or state that it is merely my 'opinion'. So here's a re-write - which I hope will satisfy the person who seems so keen on implying that I'm lying (why would I be doing that?)
This is entirely based on my personal experience of IJT - and on what I've heard from others online. I don't have links to hand, and if my word isn't good enough them so be it. But the key point is this. I queried one of these offers with IJT some years ago - specifically about the half-size toner capacity v full-size - as I had heard that they may be half-capacity ones. I didn't get a proper answer so decided not to order.
A year or so later I was tempted back to the offer - decided to give a go and bought one - a colour Dell. On arrival it had multiple packs of only 'starter' toners - and the printer itself, which, according to the manual had starter toners inside it already, waiting to be unsealed, had just empty spaces where they should have been.
Now, 'starter toners' aren't sold separately, so they had to have been taken from inside printers. The printer supplied had its starter toners missing. And the starter toners only have half-capacity - meaning that IJTs claim that the toner sets did up to Xthousand pages were wrong - the toner sets they were supplying only did 0.5 Xthousand pages.
That's three items to complain about - a printer which has been opened and had components removed, toner sets that are only half the capacity stated, and toner-sets that are not actually meant for resale.
I complained - specifically about the toner capacity mis-representation - and after some difficulty (in getting a reply) I did get sent additional toner sets to make up the missing capacity. I was also led to understand that IJT buy in these printers already opened and that this is their normal practice.
As I said in my original post here - the offer, even with half-capacity toners, is still relatively good value for money - I was merely warning people that they might not get what is implied in the ads, certainly in terms of capacity. And also, depending on how you look at it and how fussy you are, you might be uneasy about a printer that's been unpacked and re-packed.
That's my experience, and, from correspondence elsewhere, other's experience too. If reporting on this is such a problem then perhaps I shouldn't bother raising such issues - but I think it deserves highlighting.
Furthermore, if anything I've said about these offers is incorrect perhaps IJT can post here and state their case. I'm reporting factually, on personal experience, and I'm sorry if that isn't good enough but it surely should be.0
