WHY is he paying 1p a week tax?

One of my sons has a paper round - one day per week from which he earns £5 - he has a tax code of 810L - which is clearly stated on his payslip - can someone please tell me why each week he has a deduction of 1p tax on his earnings each week???

Ha Ha, to be honest I wouldnt bother, you will be held on an 0845 number for ages, not worth it for 1p a week.

His tax code is fine, that is normal, tell him to ask his employer as to why any tax is taken off..

I think you can earn well over 150 a month before paying tax.

And hats off to your lad, I have major respect for paper boys and girls, there are there with your papers, rain or shine, snow and rain.

Well done to every single one of them

Most likely something wrong with the employer's payroll system. Take it up with the employer rather than the tax office, there's no way he should be paying tax with the earnings and tax code you quote.
  • Look on the bright side. In a year's time, he'll probably get a tax rebate of 52p. :T:T:T

I'm very curious to know why you only 'think' that he can earn well over 150 a month before paying tax, if you know that his tax code is right?! :D

OP, ask the employer, with an 810L tax code he should pay absolutely nothing. Bizarre!
' <-- See that? It's called an apostrophe. It does not mean "hey, look out, here comes an S".
  • Basically everyone in this country has a tax free amount that they can earn before they pay any tax. This year the standard is £8105.00. It matters not if he is under 16 or over that. Weekly that translates to £155.86 tax free. So if 1p is being deducted from his pay slip it has to be something wrong at the employers end not something that the Tax office has done. Look at his payslips and see what code it states on there. It should read 810L.

If I remember correctly rebates are not made untill the amount due is £10 or more; untill then it just gets carried forward each year. Under normal circumstances this level of income does not have to be advised to HMRC so possibly this deduction is never reaching them.
