A number opf companies who supposidly sell insurance are in fact only a front and another company administers the policy on behalf on an insurance company, and they more than likely use a 0844 number (with no alternative) to contact them
Can any one tell me of any insurance companies which do NOT USE these administrators and who you can deal direct with to purchase insurance and who use a normal telephone number

The world of insurance is complicated in that you have insurers, intermediaries, MGAs, brokers etc.
Any one of those can white label their services to another brand and/ or outsource to administrators for either their own brand activity or their white label work. They may also outsource some types of work but retain other types inhouse.
0844 numbers are rarely a problem - there arent many companies that dont have another number type on saynoto0870.com
I am not sure what you are actually trying to achieve, it doesnt really matter if you buy from Axa Direct or Marks & Spencers as a brand, all the staff you speak to are Axa employees even though evidently M&S are not actually an insurer. However the policy words are different, as is their pricing, and if M&S is better suited to you I dont see why you'd discredit it simply because it is a white label0 -
i have tried 0870 with my present insurers number
(0844 412 2153) and there is no alternative, what i am trying to achieve is to use an insurance company which does not use a 0844 number as i object having to pay to call a company which is selling me a product whatever the product is ,this is another example of rip of britain0 -
Saynoto0870 has several 0800 freephone numbers for Bradford & Bingley home insurance such as 0800 1073022
If you are calling from a mobile and dont want to call an 0800 freephone number then call 0292 000 0800 first and then the free phone number and it is a call to an 02 geographic number

To a degree, I would always suggest going direct (when looking at price as they key attribute anyway) if possible - BISL (including Bradford & Bingley) ask you to call them to report a claim - they don't actually do anything other than email the details on to the relevant underwriter, but it can result in a 2-3 (or longer, if there's a surge event) day wait for the insurer to actually start dealing with the claim.
Local brokers are slightly different as the will usually add value when dealing with a claim, the budget intermediaries usually don't (all in my experience)0 -
