Marketing power, effective advertising, distribution, returns policy, and for the most part the reassurance the product will do what it says on the tin.

I find it hard to understand why every bus, every train in the UK, isn't filed with commuters each clutching their Chinese-made tablet, which cost in the region of £100 (or perhaps less?!) Much better value than a Kindle

A kindle was designed for a very specific job, and it does it very well. Tablets do lots of things, some well, some not so, comparing the two on a value level is nuts.
