£1/99p shop bargains

Does anyone out there ever buy food items in £1/99p shops?

A couple of deals I have found in there are:

Dolmio Bolognese Sauce 500g (Usually around £2 per jar)
Heinz Mayo (squeezy bottle) 485g (Usually around £2)
Flash Spray With Bleach 500ml (Usually around £2)
McVities Caramel Digestives 300g (Usually £1.75)
Herbal Essences 250ml bottles (Usually around £2.79) This also works out cheaper than buying the big 400ml bottles which are usually around £3.79
Bakers Complete Dog Treats - various ones - 125g (Usually around £1.69)
Pataks Curry Sauces 450g (Usually around £1.79)

Anyone else have any bargains that they have found there?

I use Poundland and 99p Stores quite a bit. I try to stick to low carb organic so there's nothing much in there for me personally, but I buy Oreo cookies in Poundland for OH.

Buy 6-packs of kitchen roll in 99p Stores, tins of Winalot in Poundland and my mother buys Macleans toothpaste there.

I think providing you research prices and sizes elsewhere first it is possible to pick up bargains, even on food.
  • I do find it can be quite hit and miss. You can't exactly do a weekly shop in there, but I find it good to stock up on things that I use fairly often but don't want to pay ridiculous prices for. It's also great for stocking the cleaning cupboard!

I've got a list on my kitchen noticeboard. OH has the sea salt and black pepper grinders £1 each at Poundland and I've bought the 2 Sarson's malt vinegar for £1. I'll probably get the 2 for £1 Ritz offer and give him one box for work and keep the other for Christmas and get the Jacob's cream cracker box unless I see a better offer.

From 99p Stoes he's had the Oreo cookies and we've had some books.

toast toppers - for some reason they remind me of my childhood - in the £1 shops they are 2 for £1 - in Asda they are 70-odd pence each for the tiny tin. Toothpaste, birdfood is fantastic in my local £1 shop, the National Trust packs of birdfood are - surprisingly - £1!

I always check out my local 99p and Poundworld stores. Even allowing for some 'creative' packaging, which was highlighted on tv recently, if you look carefully there are still lots of bargains to be found. E.G. 8 wild bird fat balls, (Wilkinsons is next cheapest at 89p for 4), and 100g packs of dried mealworms (over £2 in Wilcos). My bargain today was a Fray Bentos chicken 'pie in a tin'. Marked Limited Edition and PM'd £2.19. Good store cupboard standby with very long date.

Our 99p shop had large jars of minced garlic (like the Lazy stuff) which was great. If it's still there I'll buy more and also look for ginger.

It might not be a fake.. I bought a branded toothpaste for my daughter from the 99p shop and called the manufacturer to check it's flouride content as I couldn't see it on the pack. The customer services lady informed me that the flavour I'd bought was not made for the UK market. So it could be that the toothpaste you bought was not fake, but 'foreign'...or rather produced for overseas markets.
