Jessops & faulty Sony Camera.

I bought a £500 camera from jessops about a year ago. It has developed a fault in the battery compartment.
I emailed them & they told me i had to go into the store, prove that it wasn't something i caused, leave it with them to send off and fix and the go and collect it again.
My boyfriend had a camera from Jessops before which they sent off 3 times and each time it malfunctioned again. By number 4 they finally gave us a new camera.
My problem is:
1. The camera isn't fit for purpose. It has a demonstrable fault.
2. Now I have to go into town (1.5 hour at least wasted).
3. Then be without a camera for goodness knows how long.
4. Then go back and pick up the mended camera (another 1.5 hour at least)
+ petrol + parking etc.
At the end I'll have a camera that I won't have much faith in.
I asked them if I could send it to them & they could send me a new one thus saving time & money for me but they said no.
Do I have any rights here?
I may be being picky but I don't go to town much so this would really be pain.
It seems unfair that all the inconveniences are on my behalf even though I paid very good money for what has turned out to be a faulty unit.
Thank you.

Why on earth do you expect them to replace the camera without being given the opportunity to inspect yours?
Of course you have rights.
The Sale of Goods Act says you, the consumer, have to prove to the seller that the fault is inherent.
Have a read of MSE's Consumer Rights article for more detail.
Their How to Complain guide will also help.0 -
Both you and the merchant has rights!
As pointed out, it is up to you to prove the fault is inherent as the item is over 6 months old. So you could get a local engineers report and send it along with the camera to them.
Assuming they accept the engineers report it is then up to them to decide if they resolve the issue with repair, replacement or refund. If they did refund they would be entitled to deduct a reasonable amount for the 1 years useage you've had out of the item.0 -
I appreciate the replies.
I know the fault is inherent & I will prove that to them. I have read that other people have had the same problem with this unit also. If we presume I'm right on this issue my problem is that thereafter I will be out of pocket for time & money & camera less for an unknown time through no fault of my own.
To me, this doesn't seem fair.0 -

They're well within the law, you don't really have a choice. It's a fair offer.0 -

Other people having the same fault is not proof. Whilst you don't think it fair, they are acting within the law. It's you who is wanting to exceed your rights, by quite a bit.
If you want that then you are going to have to appeal to their better nature and taking such a combative approach is not the way to get a gesture of good will.0 -
