Disposal methods and costs vary from council to council. Phone your Environmental Health department and ask them where/how they want it disposing.

I hope that you knew about the dangers of asbestos before you started the job

First off, I would be very surprised if a downpipe was made of asbestos. I can't think of any good reason why they would be - most are made of cast iron.

Secondly, up here in Scotland anyway, there have been recent allowances for the disposal of low risk asbestos to civic amentity sites.

The guys at your dump have probably been briefed to assume if they don't know if the material contains asbestos, to assume it does.

Contact the head of the cleansing department and tell him it isn't asbestos and ask to have it disposed of.

There were plenty of properties that used asbestos piping, normally for carrying drinking water or for sewage disposal. If the OP took them from an old building then it's quite feasible that they could be made from asbestos.

Probably an idea to double wrap them in polythene for the moment (in case they get damaged and release fibres) until they are disposed of properly.

It is most likely asbestos cement which does contain asbestos but shouldn't be too dangerous unless sawn, drilled or smashed into dust.

Most councils won't collect asbestos, but there should be at least one civic amenity site within the town which will accept small quantities of household asbestos provided it is sealed within strong polythene bags. Your council should be able to tell you which site can receive it.
  • Asbestos was often used for gutters and downpipes and so it is quite possible that it is and so it should be treated with caution. If in doubt assume that it is asbestos!

Our local dump has a large skip for household asbestos.
They ask you not to break up anything you throw in there and to throw it in carefully.
Asbestos finds in a lot of properties are the 'safe' variety of asbestos like corrugated roofing on old garages and soffit boards. These should still be handled with care and not broken up.
It goes without saying that not all roofs and soffits are made of the safe asbestos type...some are not. Find out which type you have...then take it from there.

I can confirm that our local council tip takes asbestos so it isn't an uncommon thing.

I asked one of the blokes there and he provided some blue bags for me to wrap the asbestos in, it had to then be wrapped in a second clear bag. They have a special skip it goes into.
