I've been shopping around and in my small town quoted between £200 and £275 plus vat. How can they justify such rates when min wage is not even a tenner? Some sort of price-fixing must be in operation to keep figures in this orbit, isn't this a national scandal?

I've just had a leaflet through my door advertising a local solicitor who'll handle each transaction for £450+Vat (with a typical 'get of of jail' clause you would expect from a legal company should complications arise)

I'm sure I could get this cheaper if I shopped around, especially for a combined sale & purchase.

There's even cheaper options if you search online. You don't need a local solicitor, and if you are moving miles away, then if you allow one solicitor to handle both transactions they won't be local to one of them anyway.

    How long ago was that?

MrsLA is an education consultant. She charges £400 - 500 a day but has virtually no overheads. In May she did 25 chargeable days, in September she did none. that is all part of the risk and reward of being self employed.

That was 10 yrs ago, so maybe £250 at todays prices.

I'm afraid i'm not keen on consultants, presumably education consultants can only do work for schools and local authorities who are made to employ them so they can tick boxes for the govt when they could do the same work in-house and cheaper. As for not getting any work some months thats the risk you take when you are self employed, but she still earned more in May than my pension is per year
