Type of RAM memory used

Options
Hi

I have a custom made PC which was built by a guy who I can no longer contact (there are no manuals etc). I now would like to increase the RAM memory.

Is there a way of knowing the type of RAM used on the PC without having to open the case?

Thanks!

you could right click on the my computer icon, then select properties. select the "general" tab. This would just give you the ammount not the type of memory.

It really is easy to take the lid off, have a look and put the lid back on. (or ask a friend who is clued up on computers) .
If you can't say something nice - SHUT UP :p

    CPU-Z is a popular,small, freeware utility see http://www.cpuid.com/
This can inform you of the type of ram and in which slot it resides as well as many other details. The SPD section of CPU-Z will tell you the manufacturer and part number of the ram. You can also find out what type of motherboard you have.

I can recommend Crucial memory, you can either select your motherboard from a list or use their "scan my system" prog to identify your RAM.
Then simply choose from the list of compatible memory.

Delivery is fast and free for orders over £25 ATM.

    HI Doublespresso,

There is no way that you will be able to put in new memory without opening the PC---so might as well do it and then see. if you take out the memory and see how many notches it has---let us know and we can tell you what type it is. Also tell us any--large numbers that you printed on the motherboard.

Other option is to tell us---what is the CPU speed, type of CPU and approx how old? This is at best a guess.

    Lastly
try to download---BELARc advisor from http://www.crucial.com/Support/belarc_download.asp and tell us the motherboard or main circuit board details and we can let you know.

    Cheers
  • Hi Guys,

Just to clarify, it's not a matter that I'm afraid to open the case, I've done this many times and even added components without "fear" lol.
The problem is that the PC is "on" alsmost 24/7 and it is situatated in a place behind a heavy desk with difficlut access, lots of cables etc.
So I was trying to avoid 2 visits to the inner parts of the PCs (one to find out the type of RAM and another visit to install the chip once i bought it online)

    Cheers anyway!

Definitely - use the "Scan my system" option from Crucial. It will tell you all you need to know ... it will even recommend suitable memory to add to your PC.

I ordered some memory for a friend's PC on Easter Sunday (27 Mar) - it was delivered on Tuesday, 29 Mar. Bearing in mind there were TWO Bank Holidays there, that is awesome service - cheap as chips, too :)

Crucial is Crucial for memory :)
    Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac ;)
