Grass Seeds and different types

Hi this is my 1st post although i've been reading the forum for a while now.

My question relates to grass seed, its that time of year again when we all start gardening and after my 1st cut of the lawn i've noticed some bald patches and went to get some grass seed and found loads of different types and prices and got a little confussed.

I found some seed that was aimed specificaly at growing grass in shaded areas such as under trees and bushes, I was very tempted by this but the small packet was £16.99 !!!!

So heres my question - Is there any difference in the seeds available especially since there appears to be such a vast difference in prices, also can anyone recommend, 1. A cheap source for buying seeds, 2. A seed to buy to give me a hardwearing lawn and grass under trees and shrubs

Thats for reading and sorry to go on lol

    hi there

I got some bog standard grass seed from Wilkinsons ( about 3 quid) last year. To be honest, grass is quite hard to grow I think, saying that my old garden was rubbish full of stones & hardcore. I did get a fair amount out of it, any failiure was down to the soil itself.
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast

Thanks Lord_Gardener, that web site is really usefull and is now in my favorites, at least I have a good idea off which seed to buy now, i think i'll be using Hard Fescue, Festuca longifolia in the bald spots in the garden because its hard wearing and drought resistant (that should help with my lad and my dalmatain lol) and use something like Creeping Bent,
Agrostis stolonifera under shrubs and trees as it seem tollerent to these conditions, all I need now is somewhere cheap to buy them lol

There is a huge difference in the types of grass seed available. Since you do not know the differences you ought to stick to a “utility type” of seed. That way you will get the hardy grasses that will withstand children, ball games, lack of attention etc. The bog standard packets from B & Q, Wilkinsons and so on should suit you.

People such as myself who enjoy gardening are always feeding, mowing and generally doing various things to the lawn. Which is why people comment on how nice it is and why doesn’t their grass look as nice? At the very least you should apply a fertilizer every spring and cut it once a week.

Well I guess if you can achieve a bolwling green lawn I should listen to your advice, I'll just buy the cheap stuff and see how I get on, after all, for me anyway, a nice lawn would be good but its the money saving thats important
