Potentially kitten diabetes?

I posted on here a month or so ago, after rehoming a kitten who has very small and potentially neglected. She had her first jabs (and had put on 300g!, making her 900g) and when I took her back yesterday for the second jabs they weighed her and she's put on no weight, which is concerning as she's potentially around 13 - 18 weeks old and is still 900g.

She's very active although she does have long periods of sleep, longer than I remember my other two having, she drinks a huge amount, she eats a huge amount, she also has very runny bowels - initially she was treated for worms but they have now given her pro kolin to try and help.

As the symptoms are similar I am wondering what the chances are of it being diabetes? If it is, how much would treatment cost? She isn't insured although I'm thinking I may need to before her next vet check on Monday!

  • It could be many different things. Including 'just one of those things, nothing to worry about' and all the way up to 'lifethreatening'.

And you will find that any insurance won't cover pre existing conditions, which this is as the vet is already noting something may not be quite right.

I'm not surprised that she eats and drinks a lot if she's got loose motions, she wont be absorbing things properly. We've just had lots of kittens in from one place, all with runny motions, and after 2 weeks of Hills i/d food and prokolin, I've taken in a faeces sample today to the vets which they've sent off for me. I need to know if there is still a worm problem (obviously wormed 2 weeks ago), and whether there is some reason like campylobacter, coccidios etc, in which case the vet can give me the right treatment for them.

ps thanks for giving her a home :)

It's too late to insure if the kitten for this health problem unfortunately, you need two clear weeks of insurance before symptoms appear. The diarrhoea will affect her energy levels, appetite and drinking habits and weight gain. Have you been advised to try a hypoallergenic wet or raw diet?

  • It doesn't sound like diabetes. However, treatment for diabetes has moved on & the condition is treatable. Also, the feline pancreas can regenerate unlike human pancreas. This means that cats don't need insulin injections for the rest of their lives.

My pensioner kitty was diagnosed with diabetes. The vet at the time really panicked me. However, I did some research of my own & signed up to feline diabetes forums & with help from the members, I was able to get her insulin altogether only 2 months after initial diagnosis.

They always remain diabetic & it's generally ill health or extreme stress that can affect their requirement for short term insulin injections.

I would see what your vet says. It could be something very simple as the food she is eating just isn't agreeing with her.
  • its not quite surprising and rare thing for me although she eats more and watering her self but due to loose motion she not getting not much to her body and might be possible it is that she is having other diagnostic problems.you should be check her properly from doctor make sure that what kind of problem she is having.but the other thing it some kind of species almost remain same through all their lives.
