Do I need to have a credit card?

This is most definitely not a wind up.
I am fortunate enough that the only debt we hold is the mortgage and my Wife's student loan.
I have 2 mobile contract's as well.

Am I in danger of falling off the credit radar and come re-mortgage suffering because of it?

Do I need to hold a low limit card paid fully each month and say do the shopping on it?

Thank you for your time

  • There are other reasons why you might like to consider a credit card such as cashback and reward points, section 75 protection for goods over £100 (i think it is).If you travel abroad some credit cards are better than debit cards for overseas spending and cash withdrawals.

However I would imagine that managing your mortgage and mobile phone payments well will be helping your credit history so you might not need a cc to remortgage.
  • You have credit history due to the mortgage and phones but as Andy says, you can get useful protection for larger purchases by using a card and cash back or rewards too. You can direct debit the full balance so you know you'll never have charges. They don't offer that but if you ask for it they will do it.

I've had my Tesco credit card on full direct debit for 10 years, we get airmiles (avios) which pay for car hire for our main holiday and a city break every year.
I'm a qualified accountant but please make sure you get expert advice as any opinion is made in a private capacity.
