Are netbooks any good for work?

I need to access my emails on something other than my phone.
I would also like to access my database which I have just paid to have web access.
Would a netbook be ok for this?
My options are
Tablet with keyboard
Netbook
Small laptop (don't want anything big and heavy!)
I would love a MacBook but I can't afford it at the mo !

Netbook would be fine if you are happy with the size of the screen.0

It's down to the screen size, really.
I've tried using Word on a Netbook, and the display just isn't big enough.
A better option is a notebook type laptop, like the Lenovos or something; you can get a used one of similar power to a Netbook for around the £100 mark (eg. ThinkPad X61).0 -
hi...yah netbook is fine for work especially for a light work but i more prefer using laptop because i think it's more efficient to use...0

A netbook is fine, if you can put up with the constant scrolling up and down the screen - the low vertical resolution tends to be the main limitation. I find the keyboard on mine fine for moderate amounts of typing. If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.0 -
If you like the size and weight of a netbook but want something with a little more grunt take a look at a Dell Latitude D420 or D430.0

Thinking completely outside of the box..... a friend of mine recently bought a no-name clone of Ainol's "Elf2" 7" tablet, complete with a fake-leather keyboard case. The seller was called "OTA Mobile Device Co", and he found them on AliExpress.com (Chinas's equivalent of Ebay, which is part owned by Yahoo.) He paid an extraordinary US$70 (including delivery) for the package -that's just over forty quid! (Admitedly the "free delivery" took ages... but it WAS free!) On his new tablet he installed "Kingsoft Office" - a fairly good (and 100% FREE) Microsoft Office compatible suite. The tablet (unlike the Nexus) has a USB port, a miniUSB OTG port, and a mini HDMI port. Wifi connection too, obviously.
I suspect that the amount you were pondering spending was somewhat higher than "just over forty quid". But it doesn't need to be...! I checked online earlier today, and the same product is still on offer at the same price from the same sellers. Or even $10 less if you don't want the external keyboard/case!!!0 -
Anyone would think lately Ron that you are trying to get your business of selling your Ainol products through various websites you have set up to sell them.
Unless the amount of times you have mentioned them in your 10 posts is just a coincidence?"If you no longer go for a gap, you are no longer a racing driver" - Ayrton Senna0 -
I generally wouldn't recommend netbooks; they tend to be quite poor performance and the limited screen size limits productivity.
You can get some quite lightweight laptops these days, like this Toshiba Satteline L750, which weighs about two kilos.0 -

That depends on what you want it for. Mine is fine for emails and listening to iPlayer in the garden. Web surfing is a bit tedious because of the screen size, but doable.
I once had VMPlayer installed on mine, so I could run a Linux distribution on it under Windows XP. The poor thing struggled a bit, but it still worked. Plugging in a higher resolution external monitor made it a lot more useable. If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.0
