Professional certificates are different, a lot of employers need to have checked them to cover themselves. An accountant who hasn't passed their exams would be a lawsuit waiting to happen.

I work in financial services, and my particular company uses an external 'checker' to verify details on CVs. We had one situation where a new employee had bumped up her GCSE results on her CV, and the truth came out when her school was contacted. They decided to keep her after discussion, but it was noted, so it's worth being honest about qualifications on your CV.

Off topic - I really do not mean this as offensive as it will sound, but is there any way the job centre will send you on a basic English course? Nothing puts me off hiring someone that poor spelling, punctuation and grammar. I couldn't care less about GCSE results, but if they do not even know to use a capital I when referring to themselves, I won't even read it.

    Good luck with your search.

People write differently on an online forum and a job application. For example this sentence that you wrote doesn't really make sense: "Nothing puts me off hiring someone that poor spelling, punctuation and grammar." I am sure if you were writing something work related you would have double checked it.
