Buildings/Contents quote

My daughter received a building and contents quote from the AA offering 10% off as she has a breakdown policy with them.

But, she doesn't have a home to insure. She still lives with parents (us). The quote has all the detailed of our house, no of bedrooms, type of property etc and states occupancy "you and your partner".

I assume at some time I gave them this information myself when I asked for a quote, but I have an email confirming my request to remove my details from their mailing list.

They have clearly retained at least some of this information and used it to generate a quote in my daughter's name.

Shouldn't my information (and my daughter's) be independent in terms of data protection.

Comments

  • Not an expert on this matter but theortically yes, it should be independant information. But if she has the same surname and live at the same address, it is easy for a company to make the assumption you are both the same person.

It would seem that your email to request has been ignored or it may not have even got to anyone? You should check, telephone and write to their head office if you really want to get your details off their system. You shouldn't have to but that's the only way.

No, they responded to my email and confirmed my details were removed, they even gave me what they call a "service request number". Since then I haven't had any mail from them.

Sounds to me like they are stopping the mail but retaining the information.

It could be that their system assumed you were husband/ wife (or wife/ wife as I am not sure if your her mother or father) given your same address, name, you've declared living with a partner, if your daughters got breakdown then she's evidently an adult etc.

Alternatively much of the information you mention is easily sourceable externally with a certain amount of guesswork to fill in the blanks
